نامَslept صَحبيmy companions وَلَمbut did not أَنَمI sleep
مِنbecause of خَيالٍan apparition بِناto us أَلَمcame visiting
My companions slept, but I did not sleep,
I could not sleep, my friend's name was on my mind
Because of an apparition that visited us.
A fantasy of pain that haunted me
طافَcircled بِالرَكبِaround the caravan موهِناًlate at night
بَينَbetween خاخٍKhakh إِلىto إِضَمIdam
It circled the caravan late at night,
He circled the group submissively
Between Khakh and Idam.
Between rugged hills and twisted trees
ثُمَّthen نَبَّهتُI roused صاحِباًa companion
طَيِّبَgood الخيمِdisposition وَالشِيَمand character traits
Then I roused a companion,
Then I woke my friend, kind and true
Of good disposition and character,
I said “Bakr, please cure my misery
أَريَحِيّاًgenerous مُساعِداًhelpful
غَيرَnot نِكسٍa coward وَلاnor بَرِمirritable
Generous and helpful,
On this dark night of apprehension
Neither cowardly nor irritable.
Go to Hind and say I burn for thee”
قُلتُI said ياO بَكرُBakr شَفَّنيhas worn me thin
لاعِجُburning torment الحُبِّof love وَالأَلَمand pain
I said: O Bakr, I am worn thin
By love's burning torment and pain.
إِئتِgo to هِنداًHind فَقُلthen say لَهاto her
لَيلَةَon the night of الخَيفِthe Khayf (mountain-foot slope) ذيDhu سَلَمSalam
Go to Hind and tell her,
On the night at the Khayf of Dhu Salam.
