أَلاAh! ياO هِندُHind قَدindeed زَوَّدتِyou have supplied قَلبيmy heart
جَوىa burning ache حُزنٍof sorrow تَضَمَّنَهُcontained it الضَميرُthe inner heart
Ah, Hind, you have laden my heart
Ah, Hind, you have filled my heart
With sorrow’s burning anguish, harbored deep within.
with sorrow's burning ache, harbored in my innermost heart.
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) غِبتِyou are absent كادَalmost إِلَيكِtoward you قَلبيmy heart
فَدَتكِmay it ransom you النَفسُthe soul مِنfrom شَوقٍlonging يَطيرُflies
Whenever you are absent, toward you my heart is all but—
Whenever you are absent, toward you my heart almost
—may my soul ransom you!—flying out of longing.
flies with longing—may my soul be your ransom!
يَطولُgrows long اليَومُthe day فيهِin it لاnot أَراكُمI see you all
وَيَوميand my day عِندَat رُؤيَتِكُمseeing you all قَصيرُshort
The day on which I do not see you grows long,
The day on which I do not see you grows long,
While my day when I behold you is brief.
and my day when I see you is short.
وَقَدand indeed أَقرَحتِyou have wounded بِالهِجرانِthrough desertion قَلبيmy heart
وَهَجرُكَand your desertion فَاِعلَميso know أَمرٌa matter كَبيرُgrave
You have ulcerated my heart with estrangement,
And you have wounded my heart with your desertion;
And know that your desertion is a grave affair.
and your desertion—know this—is a grave matter.
فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom أَطلِقيloosen حَبليmy tether وَجوديand be generous
فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَهَGod ذوpossessed of عَفوٍpardon غَفورُever-forgiving
May I ransom you—unloose my tether and be generous;
May I be your ransom! Loosen my tether and be generous,
For God is rich in pardon, ever-forgiving.
for God is full of pardon, ever-forgiving.
