ياO خَليلَيَّmy two friends مِنfrom مَلامٍreproach دَعانيleave me (you two)
يا خَليلَيَّ مِن مَلامٍ دَعاني
وَأَلِمّاand visit briefly (you two) الغَداةَin the morning بِالأَظعانِat the women's camel litters
وَأَلِمّا الغَداةَ بِالأَظعانِ
O my two friends, spare me reproach,
O my bosom friends, cease from blaming me,
and visit the women in their camel litters at dawn.
And gently on the morn reprove me not.
لاdo not تَلوماblame (you two) فيconcerning أَهلِthe household of زَينَبَZaynab إِنَّindeed الthe
لا تَلوما في أَهلِ زَينَبَ إِنَّ ال
قَلبَheart رَهنٌheld in pledge بِئالِto the family of زَينَبَZaynab عانِa captive
قَلبَ رَهنٌ بِئالِ زَينَبَ عانِ
Do not blame me over Zaynab's household; indeed, the
Blame not the kin of Zainab if my heart
heart is pledged to Zaynab's family, a captive.
Is thrall to her; blame her not.
وَهيَand she أَهلُworthy of الصَفاءِsincerity وَالوِدِّand affection مِنّيfrom me
وَهيَ أَهلُ الصَفاءِ وَالوِدِّ مِنّي
وَإِلَيهاand toward her الهَوىlove فَلاso do not تَعذُلانيreproach me (you two)
وَإِلَيها الهَوى فَلا تَعذُلاني
And she is worthy of my sincerity and affection,
The abode of candour she, and grace to me;
and my love is for her, so do not reproach me.
To her my passion cleaves—condemn me not.
لَمnot تَدَعshe left لِلنِساءِfor women عِنديwith me نَصيباًa share
لَم تَدَع لِلنِساءِ عِندي نَصيباً
غَيرَexcept ماwhat قُلتُI said مازِحاًin jest بِلِسانيwith my tongue
غَيرَ ما قُلتُ مازِحاً بِلِساني
She has left other women no share with me,
No portion left she for the maids with me
except what I said in jest with my tongue.
Save raillery my lips have wantoned.
وَلَعَمريand by my life لَحَينُindeed, the doom of عَمروٍAmr إِلَيهاtoward her
وَلَعَمري لَحَينُ عَمروٍ إِلَيها
يَومَon the day of ذيDhu الشَريal-Shari قادَنيled me وَدَعانيand summoned me
يَومَ ذي الشَري قادَني وَدَعاني
And, by my life, it was Amr's doom that toward her
By my life, the time of '*Amr unto her
led me and summoned me on the day of Dhu al-Shari.
The day Fate led and urged me.
ماnot أَرىI think ماas long as حَيِّيتُI live أَنthat أَذكُرَI recall المَوthe meeting-
ما أَرى ما حَيِّيتُ أَن أَذكُرَ المَو
قِفَ-place مِنهاwith her بِالخَيفِat al-Khayf إِلّاexcept شَجانيit grieved me
قِفَ مِنها بِالخَيفِ إِلّا شَجاني
I do not think, while I live, I can recall the meeting
Naught see I since I lived, if I forget
with her at al-Khayf without its grieving me.
The halt near by, save pierce me.
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said لِتِربِهاto her same-age companion وَلِأُخرىand to another woman
ثُمَّ قالَت لِتِربِها وَلِأُخرى
مِنof قَطيبٍmixed stock مَوَلَّدٍof mixed descent حَدِّثانيtell me (you two)
مِن قَطيبٍ مَوَلَّدٍ حَدِّثاني
Then she said to her same-age companion and another
Then to her girl and another she said
of mixed descent: "Tell me, you two,
Of a lead-born ancient crone: Discourse to me,
كَيفَhow ليfor me اليَومَtoday أَنto أَرىI see عُمَرَUmar المُرthe send-
كَيفَ لي اليَومَ أَن أَرى عُمَرَ المُر
سِلَ-er سِرّاًsecretly فيin القَولِthe message أَنthat يَلقانيhe would meet me
سِلَ سِرّاً في القَولِ أَن يَلقاني
how can I see Umar today, who is sending
How shall I see to‐day '*Umar approach,
secret word that he would meet me?"
Privily, in talk, that he may meet me?
قالَتاthe two women said نَبتَغيwe seek إِلَيهِto him رَسولاًa messenger
قالَتا نَبتَغي إِلَيهِ رَسولاً
وَنُميتُand we stifle الحَديثَthe talk بِالكِتمانِthrough secrecy
وَنُميتُ الحَديثَ بِالكِتمانِ
The two said: "We will seek a messenger to him,
They said: A messenger we fain would find,
and bury the talk in secrecy."
And sleight the converse that it spread not.
إِنَّindeed قَلبيmy heart بَعدَafter الَّذيwhat نالَit gained مِنهاfrom her
إِنَّ قَلبي بَعدَ الَّذي نالَ مِنها
كَالمُعَنّىlike one love-tormented عَنaway from سائِرِall the other النِسوانِwomen
كَالمُعَنّى عَن سائِرِ النِسوانِ
Indeed, my heart, after what it gained from her,
My heart, since she vouchsafed it of her grace,
is like one love-tormented, turned away from all other women.
Is as the dedicated cloistered.
Sol 6.1
