I lay sleepless, and the one I long for was not near at evening.

And I was burdened with suffering on Asma's account when she went far away.

By your life, I did not willingly dwell beside Ghumdan

and Sha'ub's palace out of passionate love for her.

But a fever brought me low for three

full days; then it kept returning to us on alternate days.

And even if immortality were offered for walking

to the door, I would not move a limb for it.

And companions lay stricken, their groaning like

the moaning of larks that had left a fertile land.

For had you seen, on the day of Suwayqa,

my halt and my holding back the pale camels, bleeding and hunched,

then the hair on your head would have stood on end with longing,

and your eyes would have emptied themselves in streams of tears.

Do I not love anyone I see enjoying your affection,

and honor even a dog of yours if I meet it one day?

I see Umm Abd Allah has turned away, as though I,

through what the slanderer did, had committed a sin against her.

So do not listen to the words of one who wishes that I

and you should pass the evening in barrenness wherever we dwell.
