Old haunts and sheepfolds stirred the heart,
Dwelling sites and enclosures stirred the heart,
effaced, with trees grown high above them.
effaced, already overgrown by trees.

Summer winds have worn them down,
And summer winds have ravaged them,
weaving patterns through the earth, together with the rain.
weaving the dust in varied patterns, along with the rain.

I stood there once, lingering,
One day I remained standing among them,
asking the dwelling whether it held any news—
asking the dwelling whether it held any news

the dwelling of her who said to companions of hers,
of her who said to companions her own age,
coy maidens graced with warmth and modesty,
slow-stepping, full of warmth and modesty,

as they walked through a delightful open valley,

on soft, level ground, adorned
by a cloudy day untainted by dust:
by a cloudy day untainted by dusty haze.
قَدindeed خَلَوناwe are alone فَتَمَنَّينَso make your wishes بِناwith us

إِذsince خَلَوناwe are alone اليَومَtoday نُبديwe reveal ماwhat نُسِرwe keep secret
“We are alone, so each of you make a wish;
“We are alone, so share your wishes with us;
alone today, let us reveal what we conceal.”
since we are alone today, let us reveal what we keep secret.”

They read the longing in her eyes,
Then they recognized longing in her eye,
for the gaze reveals love’s bubbling.
and longing’s froth is revealed by the gaze.

لَوif only أَتاناhe came to us اليَومَtoday فيin سِرٍّsecret عُمَرUmar
Seeking to please her, they said, “Our wish is:
They said, seeking to please her, “Our wish is
if only ʿUmar came to us today in secret!”
that Umar would come to us today in secret.”

While they were speaking of me, they caught sight of me,
While they were speaking of me, they caught sight of me,
less than a mile away, my white-blazed steed bearing me at a gallop.
less than a mile away, the white-blazed horse galloping with me.

The eldest said, “Do you recognize the young man?”
The eldest said, “Do you recognize the young man?”
The middle one said, “Yes—this is ʿUmar.”
The middle one said, “Yes, this is Umar.”

قَدindeed عَرَفناهُwe have recognized him وَهَلand can يَخفىbe hidden القَمَرthe moon
The youngest—whom I had enthralled—said,
The youngest said—and I had enthralled her—
“We know him! Can the moon ever be hidden?
“We have recognized him; can the moon be hidden?

Here is a lover who did not turn aside before reaching us;
This is a beloved who made no stop before reaching us;
his doom has driven him to us—and destiny.”
doom and destiny drove him to us.

So he came to us when the camel of night lowered its breast,
So he came to us when it laid down its breast—
settling over him and stretching full length.
the camel of night—upon him, and stretched out.

The dewy fragrance of musk from his garments
And the fine grains of musk from his garments—
rippled over him like water, leaving him fresh and radiant.
he had poured water over them, so they glistened.

“What we wished for has come to us, and now
What we wished for has indeed come to us, and
the stingy boors and filthy fellows are kept away.”
the bores and the loathsome have been kept away from us.”
