قالَsaid الخَليطُthe companions غَداًtomorrow تَصَدُّعُناour parting
قالَ الخَليطُ غَداً تَصَدُّعُنا
أَوor بَعدَهُafter it أَفَلاthen will you not تُشَيُّعُناyou see us off
أَو بَعدَهُ أَفَلا تُشَيُّعُنا
The companions said: Tomorrow comes our parting,
The mixed one said tomorrow we will split
Or the day after—will you not see us off?
Or after it, will you not bid us farewell?
أَمّاas for الرَحيلُdeparture فَدونَthen before بَعدِafter غَدٍtomorrow
أَمّا الرَحيلُ فَدونَ بَعدِ غَدٍ
فَمَتىso when تَقولُyou say الدارُthe dwelling تَجمَعُناbrings us together
فَمَتى تَقولُ الدارُ تَجمَعُنا
As for departure, it will be before the day after tomorrow;
As for leaving, it is before the day after tomorrow
When, then, do you say the dwelling will bring us together?
So when will the house say gather us?
لَتَشوقُناsurely stirs our longing هِندٌHind وَقَدand already قَتَلَتhas thoroughly understood
لَتَشوقُنا هِندٌ وَقَد قَتَلَت
عِلماًknowledge بَأَنَّof the fact that البَينَseparation فاجِعُناcausing us grief
عِلماً بَأَنَّ البَينَ فاجِعُنا
Hind surely stirs our longing, though she knows
India will yearn for us after it killed
Full well that parting will bring us grief.
Knowing that estrangement saddened us
عَجَباًhow wondrous لِمَوقِفِهاat her standing there وَمَوقِفِناand our standing there
عَجَباً لِمَوقِفِها وَمَوقِفِنا
وَبِسَمعِand within earshot of تِربَيهاher two age-mates تُراجِعُناshe converses with us
وَبِسَمعِ تِربَيها تُراجِعُنا
How wondrous her standing there, and ours,
Wondrous is her stance and our stance
And she speaks with us within earshot of her two age-mates,
And with the hearing of her upbringing she argues with us
وَمَقالِهاand her words سِرtravel لَيلَةًone night مَعَناwith us
وَمَقالِها سِر لَيلَةً مَعَنا
نَعهَدwe renew our bond فَإِنَّfor indeed البَينَseparation شائِعُناfollowing us
نَعهَد فَإِنَّ البَينَ شائِعُنا
And her words: Travel with us for one night,
And her words one night with us
So we may renew our bond, for parting follows us.
We pledge though estrangement circulated between us
قُلتُI said العُيونُwatchful eyes كَثيرَةٌnumerous مَعَكُمwith you
قُلتُ العُيونُ كَثيرَةٌ مَعَكُم
وَأَظُنُّand I think أَنَّthat السَيرَtravel مانِعُناhindering us
وَأَظُنُّ أَنَّ السَيرَ مانِعُنا
I said: There are many eyes with you,
I said, many eyes are among you
And I think the journey will hinder us.
And I think the journey prevents us
لاno بَلrather نَزورُكُمwe visit you بِأَرضِكُمُin your land
لا بَل نَزورُكُم بِأَرضِكُمُ
فَيُطاعُso is heeded قائِلُكُمyour spokesperson وَشافِعُناand our intercessor
فَيُطاعُ قائِلُكُم وَشافِعُنا
No, rather we will visit you in your land,
No, but we will visit you in your land
So your spokesperson and our intercessor will be heeded.
So your speaker is obeyed and our intercessor
قالَتshe said أَشَيءٌis it something أَنتَyou فاعِلُهُwill do it
قالَت أَشَيءٌ أَنتَ فاعِلُهُ
هَذاthis لَعَمرُكَby your life أَمor تُخادِعُناyou deceive us
هَذا لَعَمرُكَ أَم تُخادِعُنا
She said: Are you going to do
She said something, will you do it
This, by your life—or are you deceiving us?
By your life, is this or are you deceiving us?
بِاللَهِby God حَدَّثtell ماwhat نُؤَمِّلُهُwe hope for it
بِاللَهِ حَدَّث ما نُؤَمِّلُهُ
وَاِصدُقand speak truth فَإِنَّfor indeed الصِدقَtruthfulness واسِعُناsufficient for us
وَاِصدُق فَإِنَّ الصِدقَ واسِعُنا
By God, tell us what we may hope for,
By God, speak what we hope for
And speak truth, for truth is enough for us.
And be truthful for truth is all encompassing for us
إِضرِبset لَناfor us أَجَلاًa date نَعُدُّwe count لَهُtoward it
إِضرِب لَنا أَجَلاً نَعُدُّ لَهُ
إِخلافُfailure to keep موعِدِهِits appointed time تَقاطُعُناour mutual estrangement
إِخلافُ موعِدِهِ تَقاطُعُنا
Set us a date that we can count down to;
Set for us a deadline we can prepare for
Failing to keep that appointment would sever our ties.
Breaking its appointment severs ties between us
