لِمَنِwhose الدارُthe dwelling كَخَطٍّlike script بِالقَلَمwith a pen
لِمَنِ الدارُ كَخَطٍّ بِالقَلَم
لَمhas not يُغَيِّرaltered رَسمَهاits traces طولُthe long duration of القِدَمage
لَم يُغَيِّر رَسمَها طولُ القِدَم
Whose dwelling is this, like a line drawn by the pen?
Whose dwelling is this, like script traced with a pen?
The long passage of time has not altered its traces.
Long ages have not altered its traces.
صاحِO friend إِنّيindeed I شَفَّنيhas wasted me طولُthe long duration of السَقَمsickness
صاحِ إِنّي شَفَّني طولُ السَقَم
وَصَباand yearned القَلبُthe heart إِلىtoward أُمِّUmm (mother of) الحَكَمal-Hakam
وَصَبا القَلبُ إِلى أُمِّ الحَكَم
O companion, prolonged sickness has worn me thin,
My friend, prolonged sickness has wasted me,
And my heart has yearned toward Umm al-Hakam,
and my heart has yearned for Umm al-Hakam.
وَصَباand yearned القَلبُthe heart إِلىtoward بَهنانَةٍa soft, fragrant woman
وَصَبا القَلبُ إِلى بَهنانَةٍ
مِثلِlike قَرنِthe rim of الشَمسِthe sun يَبدوappears فيin الظُلَمthe darkness
مِثلِ قَرنِ الشَمسِ يَبدو في الظُلَم
My heart has yearned toward a soft, delicate beauty,
And my heart has yearned for a soft, fragrant woman,
Like the sun’s horn appearing through the darkness.

ماnot رَأَتhas seen عَينٌan eye لَهاfor her فيماin what تَرىit sees
ما رَأَت عَينٌ لَها فيما تَرى
شَبَهاًan equal فيamong أَهلِthe people of حِلٍّland outside the sanctuary وَحَرَمand the sanctuary
شَبَهاً في أَهلِ حِلٍّ وَحَرَم
No eye, among all that it beholds, has ever seen
No eye, in all it sees, has found for her
Her like among people within or beyond the sacred precinct.
an equal among those outside the sanctuary or within.
وَطَريٍّand a delicate one حَسَنٍlovely تَقويسُهُits arch
وَطَريٍّ حَسَنٍ تَقويسُهُ
زانَهاadorned her ذاكَthat وَعِرنينٌand a nose أَشَمhigh-bridged
زانَها ذاكَ وَعِرنينٌ أَشَم
With a fresh, lovely curve, beautifully arched—
And a delicate [brow], lovely in its arch—
That adorns her, along with a proud, high-bridged nose—
that adorned her, as did a high-bridged nose.
وَبِثَغرٍand with a mouth واضِحٍgleaming white أَنيابُهُits canine teeth
وَبِثَغرٍ واضِحٍ أَنيابُهُ
طَيِّبِsweet الريحِthe breath جَميلِbeautiful المُبتَسَمthe smile
طَيِّبِ الريحِ جَميلِ المُبتَسَم
And a gleaming mouth with lustrous teeth,
And with a mouth whose canine teeth gleam white,
Sweet-breathed and lovely in its smile.
