The heart has sobered, turning from thoughts of Umm al-Banin,

after all that has passed through the ages.

And now it has obeyed its reproachers,

and the steadfast heart has desisted after refusing.

Only now, when something frightening has startled it—

gray hair, which checks whoever it overtakes?

    Yet love for al-Amiri's daughter

is like a crack in a stone split open.

He yearns madly for her, and she draws near him

as darkness falls, warily in the night.

    فَمَن قالَ مِن كاشِحٍ لَم يَضِر

    And our love for her grows;

so any spiteful foe who speaks does no harm.

So if anyone has forgotten his love,

I have not forgotten, nor do I apologize.

I remembered our days at al-Shari,

and our days at the dune of al-Amar:

nights when our secrets were carried

by a confidant of ours who revealed no secret.

So the ardor of youth delighted her,

flourishing in one fresh and tall.

And when I was guileless, pursuing amusement,

a devotee of pleasure, like one felled by drunkenness,

among those who let fine striped cloaks trail,

I covered my sandals with my waist-wraps' trailing ends.

And when she was dark-eyed, soft and delicate,

heavy-bodied—whenever she rose, she would come apart.

Her buttocks would almost, if she went away

on an errand late at night, break off.
