    Remembering loved ones stirred longing in my heart,

    And fits of rapture overtook me.

    O my two friends, know that my heart

    Is lovesick for the lady of the chamber.

    The heart fell in love with a stately woman of Quraysh,

    Full of coquettish charm, with spotless robes.

    Mistress of women in a king's house,

    Her grandfather reached the summit of ancestral honor.

    A fine Janadī cloth let her show through,

    So she was like the sun through the clouds.

    Then she appeared, until, when my heart went mad,

    Maidservants concealed her with garments.

    I said, when they drew the curtain before me:

    This is no reward for a lover.

    Then a girl from the household answered,

    Coquettish and delicate, with reproach:

    قَد فَعَلنا رِضا أَبي الخَطّابِ

    Send the maidservant hastening toward him;

    We have already done what pleases Abū al-Khaṭṭāb.

    Do not consent to breaking with the daughter of Bishr,

    Noble in character, with spotless robes.

    So fear the Lord of Majesty, O Umm ʿAmr,

    And judge your captive rightly.

    Do one of three things to the captive:

    So understand them, then answer me.

    لا تَكوني عَلَيهِ سَوطَ عَذابِ

    Kill him with a swift death that brings relief;

    Do not be a scourge of torment upon him.

    Or grant requital, for it is but life for life—

    A judgment clearly set forth in the Book.

    إِنَّ شَرَّ الوِصالِ وَصلُ الكِذابِ

    Or grant him a union he can rest secure in;

    Indeed, the worst union is a union of lies.
