ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two companions قِفاstop, both of you نُقَضِّlet us fulfill لُبانَةًa longing
وَعَلىand toward الظَعائِنthe women in litters قَبلَbefore بَينِكُماyour parting, you two اِعرِضاapproach, both of you
O my two companions, stop; let us fulfill a longing.
My friend, stop to gather fragrant herbs
And approach the women in their litters before you two depart.
And turn away from slander before you two part
لاdo not تُعجِلانيhurry me, you two أَنto أَقولَI speak بِحاجَةٍof a need
وَقِفاand stop, both of you فَقَدfor indeed زُوِّدتُI was provisioned with داءًan illness مُحرِضاwasting
Do not hurry me before I speak of a need.
Don't rush me to speak of my need
And stop, for I have been provisioned with a wasting sickness.
Stop, for I have been given a provoking sickness
ماwhatever أَنسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI forget الَذيwhat بَذَلَتshe offered لَناto us
مِنهاof herself عَلىin عَجلِthe haste الرَحيلِof departure لِتُمرِضاto cause illness
Whatever I forget, I will not forget what she offered us
I cannot forget what she offered us
of herself, in the haste of departure, to make us ill;
In her haste to depart and nurse us
وَمَقالَهاand her words بِالنَعفِon the slope نَعفِthe slope of مُحَسِّرٍMuhassir
لِفَتاتِهاto her maid هَلdo تَعرِفينَyou recognize المُعرِضاthe one turning away
nor her words on the slope—the slope of Muhassir—
Her words were like the whimper of a bereaved woman
to her maid: “Do you recognize the man turning away?
Do you recognize the one who turned away?
هَذاthis الَّذيthe one who أَعطىgave مَواثِقَfirm guarantees عَهدِهِof his pledge
حَتّىuntil رَضيتُI was satisfied وَقُلتِand you said ليto me لَنnever يَنقُضاhe would break it
This is the one who gave firm guarantees of his pledge,
He who gave pledges to keep his word
until I was satisfied, and you told me he would never break it.
Until I was pleased and said he would not break them
وَزَعَمتِand you claimed ليto me أَنthat لاnot يَحولُhe would change فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
ساعٍstriving طَوالَthroughout حَياتِهِhis life ليfor me بِالرِضاto bring contentment
And you claimed to me that he would not change, for he is
And claimed he would not change, for he
striving throughout his life to keep me content.
Was striving to please me all his life
وَاللَهُand God يَعلَمُknows إِنif ظَفِرتُI gain بِمِثلِهاthe like of it
مِنهُfrom him لَيَعتَرِفَنَّhe will surely recognize ماwhat قَدalready أَقرَضاhe has lent
And God knows, if I gain the like of this
By God, if I found another like her
from him, he will surely recognize what he has lent.”
She would admit what they both borrowed
فَأَصَختُso I listened closely سَمعيmy hearing نَحوَهاtoward her فَكَأَنَّماand it was as though
أَورَيتُI kindled بَينَbetween جَوانِحيmy ribs جَمرَembers الغَضاof ghada wood
So I bent my ear toward her, and it was as though
So I turned my hearing toward her, as if
I had kindled ghada-wood embers between my ribs.
I had kindled coals of anger in my heart
فَعَطَفتُso I turned راحِلَتيmy riding-camel وَقُلتُand I said لِصاحِبيto my companion
أُنظُرlook بِعَمرِكَby your life نَحوَهاtoward her أَنwhether تومِضاshe signals
So I turned my riding-camel and said to my companion:
I turned my she-camel and said to my friend
“Look toward her, by your life, to see whether she signals.”
Look, by your life, if she flashes her eyes
قالَsaid الجَريthe messenger قَدalready أَومَضَتshe signaled قُلتُI said اِئتِهاgo to her
وَاِحذَرand beware حَريذَharshness (reading uncertain) مَقالِهاof her words أَنlest يُعرِضاit should arise
The messenger said, “She has signaled.” I said, “Go to her,
He said, she already flashed her eyes, I said go to her
and beware the harshness of her words, should it arise.”
And beware if she refuses your words
قالَتshe said لَهُto him بِاللَهِby God رَبِّكَyour Lord قُلsay لَهُto him
قَولاًwords يُحَرِّكُهُthat stir him عَسىperhaps أَنthat يَمعَضاhe feels hurt
She said to him, “By God, your Lord, tell him
She said to him, By God, your Lord, say to him
words to stir him—perhaps he will feel hurt:
Some words that may move him, perhaps he will relent
حَمَّلتَهاyou burdened her وَجداًwith yearning لَوَif مسىsettled (reading uncertain) مِثلُهُits like
يَوماًfor a day عَلىon جَبَلٍa mountain إِذاًthen لَتَقَضقَضاit would surely crumble
‘You burdened her with yearning: were its like to settle
You have burdened me with grief, if the like of it
on a mountain for a day, it would surely crumble.’”
Touched a mountain one day, it would crumble
وَتَنَظَّرَتand she awaited مِنّيfrom me الجَزاءَthe repayment لِوَعدِهاfor her promise
حَولاًfor a year تَجَرَّمَelapsed كُلَّهُall of it حَتّىuntil اِنقَضىit ended
And she awaited from me repayment for her promise,
She looked to me for reward for her promise
for a year that ran its full course until it ended.
A whole year passed by before it was fulfilled
فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered her إِنif قُلتُI spoke فَاِعفواthen forgive, you all وَاِصفَحواand pardon, you all
فَأَناfor I الَّذيam the one who لاno عُذرَexcuse ليfor me فيماfor what مَضىhas passed
So I answered her: “If I spoke amiss, forgive and pardon;
So I answered her: If I say forgive and pardon
for I am the one with no excuse for what has passed.”
It is I who has no excuse for what has passed
زَعَمَتshe claimed بِأَنّيthat I قَدalready سَلَوتُhad ceased to long وَلَوand if only دَرَتshe knew
أَنthat لَمnot أَجِدI found مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her مُتَعَرَّضاa way of escape
She claimed I had ceased to love her; if only she knew
She claimed I had turned away, and if she knew
that I had found no escape from loving her!
I could not find her love to be transient
ماnot عُدتُI returned to أُرضيI please الكاشِحينَthe spiteful enemies بِهَجرِهاby forsaking her
أَبَداًever وَإِنeven if قَلَspoke (reading uncertain) النَصيحُthe adviser وَعَرَّضاand insinuated
I will not again gratify the spiteful by forsaking her,
I will never please the slanderers with her estrangement
ever, even if the adviser speaks and insinuates.
Even if advice is little and spurned
وَأَطَعتُand I obeyed فيهاconcerning her الكاشِحينَthe spiteful enemies فَأَكثَرواso they increased
فيهاabout her المَقالَةَthe talk شامِتاًgloating وَمُعَرِّضاand insinuating
And I obeyed the spiteful about her, and they increased
I obeyed the slanderers so they multiplied
their talk about her, gloating and insinuating.
Malicious and spurned talk against me
طاوَعتُI heeded فيهاconcerning her واشِياًa slanderer فَكأَنَّنيso it was as though I
فيin صَرمِsevering ties with ذاتِthe woman with الخالِthe beauty mark كُنتُI had been مُغَمِّضاclosing my eyes
I heeded a slanderer about her, and it was as though I
I complied with the informer, as if I
had closed my eyes in breaking with the woman with the beauty mark.
Had shut my eyes in the bonds of a trusted friend
وَسَفاهَةًand folly بِالمَرءِin a man صَرمُsevering ties with صَديقِهِhis friend
يُرضيhe pleases بِهِجرَتِهِby his estrangement العَدوَّthe enemy المُبغِضاwho hates him
And it is folly for a man to sever ties with his friend,
It is foolishness if a man pleases his friend's enemy
pleasing through that estrangement the enemy who hates him.
By estranging himself from his friend’s hatred
اِرجِعgo back فَعاوِدهاthen revisit her المَساءَin the evening فَإِنَّنيfor I

“Go back and visit her again in the evening, for I
Go back and visit her at night, for I
fear that an assailant may come upon her.”
Fear the usual one with her may turn away
