أَيُّهاO you العاتِبُthe reproacher الَّذيwho رامَsought هَجريabandoning me
وَاِبتَدانيand began with me بِهَجرِهِwith his desertion وَالتَجَنّيand unjust blame
O reproacher who sought to abandon me,
O you who reproached me and decided to abandon me
And first treated me with his desertion and unjust blame:
And began to shun me with your estrangement
أَبِعِلمٍwas it with knowledge? أَتَيتَyou did ماwhat جِئتَyou did مِنّيconcerning me
عَمرَكَI adjure you اللَهَby God سادِراًheedlessly أَمor بِظَنِّon suspicion
Did you knowingly do what you did to me—
Did you come to me with knowledge or just suspicion?
I adjure you by God—or heedlessly, or on suspicion?
May God prolong your life, whether clear-headed or doubtful
وَلَوَand if اِنَّthat الَّذيwhat عَرَضتَyou presented عَلَيناto us
كانَhad been مِنfrom عِندِthe side of غَيرِكُمsomeone other than you لَمdid not يَرُعنيalarm me
And if what you laid before us
Even if what was presented to us
Had come from anyone but you, it would not have alarmed me.
Had come from someone other than you, it would not have disturbed me
أَنتِyou كُنتِyou were المُنىcherished wishes وَرُؤيَتُكِand seeing you الخُلدُeternal life
فَقَريso be comforted عَيناًin your eye بِهِby it وَاِطمَئِنّيand be reassured
You were my every wish, and seeing you was eternal life;
You were my greatest desire, and seeing you was eternity
So let your eye be comforted by it, and rest assured.
So rest your eye on that, and be assured
وَاِعلَميand know أَنَّthat ذاthis مِنَof الأَمرِthe matter حَقٌّtrue
قِسمَةٌan allotted share حازَهاsecured it لَكِfor you اللَهُGod مِنّيfrom me
And know that this is the truth of the matter:
And know that this is the truth of the matter
A share God has secured for you from me.
A destiny granted to you by God from me
فَلَقَدfor indeed نِلتِyou gained مِنfrom فُؤاديmy heart مَحَلّاًa place
لَوif تَمَنَّيتِyou wished زادَit would increase فَوقَabove التَمَنّيwishing
For you have indeed gained a place in my heart,
For you have attained a place in my heart
Which, were you to wish, would exceed the wish itself.
That, had you wished, would be more than you could wish for
