Say to the dwellings at Dhahran: The time has come

for you to speak and make your words clear.

Return our greeting to us in the words we spoke,

and tell us when the one who departed went away.

She said: And who are you? Identify yourself. He said: A man of sorrow,

whose sobbing for love has stirred up sorrows.

She said: So you are the one who sent a maid

late at night to the caravan, called Umm Sufyan.

Then you made camels kneel behind the sand ridge,

which had come from his caravan higher up, along with riders.

Then you came, slipping past the caravan unseen,

until you met someone at al-Batha.

I said: Yes; so speak clearly as we converse,

and tell me about the caravan—who was in it.

That time when you felt affection

has given way to other times since our last meeting.

And four years have passed since then,

and months; and we subtracted Sha'ban from the year.

So I spent the night seeing nothing that delighted me,

except conversation and an occasional squeeze of the hand.

Until, when the caravan was startled, I rose to leave,

with a drunkard's gait, tears falling in a steady stream.
