رِ عَلامَ الَّذي فَعَلتَ وَمِمّا
O reproacher, who stubbornly persists in estrangement,
O you who blame me with malice unfounded,
why have you done this, and for what reason?
Why do you act in this way, with envy abounding?
فيمَwhy هَجريshunning me وَفيمَand why تُجمِعُyou resolve upon ظُلميwronging me

وَصُدوداً وَلِم عَتَبتَ وَعَمّا
Why shun me, and why resolve to wrong me
Why do you shun me, gathering shadows around me,
and turn away? Why reproach me, and over what?
Giving reproach whence comes this grievance astounding?

Is it coyness, to ask still more of a lover,
Is it to make me love you more dearly,
or distance, so that you fill the heart with sorrow?
Or to fill my heart with sorrow so blinding?

Whatever your love for me may hold,

God will increase it, all faults blotting.

Or is it an enemy, going about with falsehood and lies,
Or are you a foe, spreading rumors and lies,
a spiteful foe who crept about with malicious gossip, but has not yet
A slanderer sowing discord unheeding?

found a pledge I broke after giving my word?
Breaking a pact though no betrayal was mine,
The slanderer did wrong and became blameworthy.
Believing the tales that set hearts bleeding.

They claimed I am friendly toward someone other than you.
They claim I betray you for someone else,
May your hater be paralyzed and deaf—I exempt no one!
Though loyal I stay, their words unheeding.

حافِظٌ لِلمَغيبِ ذَلِكَ مَعما
So fear God in my absence, for I
So fear God in secrecy, for I keep
am faithful in absence, keeping that concealed.
Secrecy's bond, this truth conceding.

وَيَرى الكاشِحونَ أَنفاً أَشَمّا
No loving friend is devoured in my presence,
One held dear is not fed by me,
while spiteful foes see a nose held proudly high.
While detractors are shunned, their nonsense unneeded.

We are content, even if you judge unjustly;
Though you judge me unjustly, still I acquiesce,
so accept the words of a spiteful foe, base-born on his mother's side.
Disdain the vile words of those misdeeding.
