غَداset out in the morning جِيرانُthe neighbors of أَهلِكَyour family ظاعِنيناdeparting
لِدارٍfor a dwelling غَيرَother than ذَلِكَthat مُنتَويناheading
Your family's neighbors set out in the morning,
bound for a dwelling other than that one.
وَشاقَكَand stirred your longing لِلحُدوجِfor the litters حُدوجُthe litters of سَلمىSalma
وَقَدand already بَكَرَset out early الخَليطُthe company مُزايَلِناparting from us
Salma's litters stirred your longing for the litters,
when the company set off early, leaving us.
رَمَيتَهُمyou followed them بِعَينِكَwith your gaze وَالمَطاياand the riding camels
خَواضِعٌheads bowed فيin الأَزِقَةِthe lanes يَعتَليناclimbed
You cast your gaze after them, as the riding camels,
heads bowed, climbed through the lanes.
فَهَيَّجَand so stirred مِنfrom فُؤادِكَyour heart طُولُlength of شَوقٍyearning
فِراقُthe parting of الجِيرةِthe neighbors المُتَصَدِّعيناscattering apart
Then long yearning was stirred within your heart
by the parting of the neighbors, scattering apart.
أَرىI see الأَيامَthe days قَدalready أَحدَثنَhave brought about بَيِناa separation
بِسَلمىfrom Salma بَغتَةًsuddenly وَنَوىًand distance شَطَوناfar-reaching
I see the days have brought about a parting
from Salma, suddenly, and a far-off separation.
فإِنso if تَكُنِit has النَوىdistance شَطَّتcarried far away بِسَلمىSalma
وَكُنتُand I was بِقُربِهاof her nearness وَبِهاand of her ضَنيناjealously protective
If distance has carried Salma far away,
though I clung jealously to her and her nearness,
لَقَدindeed كُناwe were نُرىseen بِأَلَذِّin the sweetest عَيشٍlife
وأَفضَلِand the greatest غِبطَةٍhappiness مُتَجاوِريناliving as neighbors
we were once seen enjoying the sweetest life,
and the greatest happiness, living side by side.

On nights when she enthralled you with long, flowing hair,
from which her braids fell curling

over the two sides of a pampered, chaste woman's back,
whose beauty awes those who gaze.
أَفيis it over سَلمىSalma يُعاتِبُنيhe reproaches me أَبوهاher father
وَإِخوَتُهاand her brothers وَهُمthough they لِيtoward me ظالِمُوناare unjust
Does her father reproach me over Salma,
and her brothers, though they wrong me?
تُريكَshe shows you إِذاwhen وَقَفَتshe stands عَلىin خَلاءٍsolitude

She shows you, when she stands in solitude,
safe from the eyes of onlookers,

arms like the forelegs of a tall, pale, maiden she-camel,
pure white in hue, never having carried a calf.
وأَسودُand black hair وَمدلَهِمَّand deeply dark اللَونِin color حَشلاًshaggy

And black hair, deeply dark and shaggy,
nourished with ben oil and costly perfume.
فَاِنكَfor you قَدindeed شُغِفتِhave smitten with love القَلبَthe heart حَتّىuntil
بَلَيتُI have wasted away وَلاyet not أَراكِI see you تَغَيَّريناchanging
For you have smitten my heart with love, until
I have wasted away, yet I do not see you change.
أَجودُI give generously وَتَبخَلينَand you withhold إِذاwhen التَقَيناwe meet
يَلينُsoftens لَكِtoward you الفُؤادُthe heart وَتَغلَظيناand you grow harsh
I give freely, while you withhold, whenever we meet;
my heart softens toward you, while you grow harsh.
كَأَنَّas though المِسكَmusk تَخلِطُهُshe mixes it بِفيهاin her mouth
وَرِيحَand the fragrance of قُرُنفُلٍcloves وَالياسَميناand jasmine
It is as though she mixes musk in her mouth,
and the fragrance of cloves and jasmine.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen أَنَّthat حَظيَmy share مِنfrom سُلَيمىSulayma

Have you not seen that my share from Sulayma
is hopes that pass at evening and at dawn?

A shapely woman whose cloak is too narrow for her,
a ten-cubit spear in the hands of armored men.
أَلاlisten! قُلsay لِلقبائِلto the tribes إِنَّindeed بَكراًBakr
وَتَغلِبَand Taghlib بَعدَafter حَربِهِمtheir warfare سِنيناfor years
Listen! Tell the tribes that Bakr
and Taghlib, after their years of war,
أَطاعواthey obeyed اللَهَGod فيin صِلةٍkinship bonds وَعَطفٍand compassion
وأَضحَواand they became اِخوَةًbrothers مُتَجاوِريناliving as neighbors
obeyed God in kinship and compassion,
and became brothers, living side by side.
أُساةٌhealers شاعِبونَmenders لِكُلِof every صَدعٍrift
وَكلِand every جَريرةٍoffense فيهِمamong them وَفيناand among us
Healers, mending every rift,
and every offense among them and among us.
مَتّىwhenever ماever أَدعُI call فيamong بَكرٍBakr يُجِبَنيanswer me
قَبائِلُهاits tribes بِأَكثَرِwith the most ناصِريناsupporters
Whenever I call among Bakr, I am answered
by its tribes, with the greatest number of supporters.
وَإِنand if هَتَفَتcall out بَنوthe sons of بَكرٍBakr أَجَبناwe answer
إِليهِمto them بِالصَنائِعِwith favors مَعلِنيناopenly proclaiming
And if the sons of Bakr call out, we answer,
openly, with acts of kindness toward them.
نُجَالِدُwe fight عَنهُمُin their defense وَتَذودُand repel عَناfrom us
كَتائِبُهُمtheir battalions يَرُحنَgo forth in the evening وَيَغتَديناand go forth in the morning
We fight in their defense, and protecting us
are their battalions, going forth at dusk and dawn.
فَلَسناfor we are not فيin مَوَدَتِناour love for اِخاناour brother
اِلىto الأَعداءِthe enemies بِالمُتَعَذِّريناones who make excuses
For we do not, for loving our brother,
offer apologies to enemies.
وَلَكنّاbut we وَإياهُمُtogether with them مَدَدناhave stretched
لِوَصلِto maintain قَرابَةٍkinship حَبلاًa rope مَتيناstrong
But we, together with them, have stretched
a sturdy rope to bind our kinship.
هُمُthey الإِخوانُthe brothers إِنif غَضِبواthey grow angry غَضِبناwe grow angry
وَإِنand if نَزَلواthey settle بِدارِin an abode of رِضىًcontentment رَضيناwe are content
They are our brothers: if they grow angry, so do we;
and if they settle in an abode of contentment, we are content.
وَبِكَراًand Bakr أَنَّthat فيin بَكرٍBakr فِعالاًdeeds
وأَحلاماًand sound judgments بِهاthrough which يَتَفاضَلوناthey excel one another
And Bakr—indeed, in Bakr are deeds,
and sound judgments through which they excel one another.
تَميدُsways الأَرضُthe earth إِنwhen رَكِبَتrides out تَميمٌTamim
وإِنand when نَزَلواthey dismount سَمِعتَyou hear لَهاfrom it أنيناa groan
The earth sways when Tamim rides out,
and when they dismount, you hear it groan.
وَكأسٍand a cup قَدindeed شُرِبَتwas drunk بِماءِwith water from ثَلجٍsnow
وأُخرىand another قَدindeed شُرِبَتwas drunk بِقاصِريناat Qasirin
And a cup was drunk with snow-water,
and another was drunk at Qasirin.
كَأَنَّas though أَكُفَهُمtheir hands عَذَبٌbranch-tips مُلقَّىًstrewn
وَحُمّاضٌand sorrel بأَيديin the hands of مُعلِنيناmen proclaiming aloud
As though their hands were scattered branch-tips,
and sorrel in the hands of men crying aloud.
فَجاؤُواso they came عَارِضاًa storm-cloud بَرِداًhail-laden وَحيناًand death
كَمِثلِlike السَيلِthe torrent يَمنَعُbars وَارِديناthose coming to water
So they came, a hail-laden cloud and death,
like a torrent barring those who come to drink.
وَشَيبُand the graying of الرأَسِthe head أَهوَنُeasier مِنthan لِقاهُمmeeting them
إِذاwhen هَزّواthey brandish القَناthe spears مُتقابِليناface to face
And the graying of one's head is easier than meeting them
when they brandish their spears, face to face.
كأَنّas though رِماحَهُمtheir spears سَيلٌa torrent مُطِلٌّlooming
وأَمساكٌand hides بَأَيديin the hands of مُورِديناmen leading to water
Their spears are like a looming torrent,
and hides in the hands of men leading to water.
فَلَمّاthen when لَمnot تَدعit left قَوساًa bow وَنبلاًand arrows
مَشَيناwe advanced النِصفَhalfway ثُمthen مَشَواthey advanced إِليناtoward us
Then, when no bow or arrows were left,
we advanced halfway, and then they advanced toward us.
فَذادُوناso they drove us back بِبيضٍwith bright swords مُرهَفاتٍsharpened
وَذُدناهُمand we drove them back بِهاwith them حَتّىuntil اِستَقَيناwe drew water
They drove us back with bright, sharpened swords,
and we drove them back with such blades until we drew water.
وأُنزِلناand we were lodged البِيوتَthe tents بِذيat Dhu طِلالٍTilal
إِلىtoward النَسَماتِthe living folk نَبغيwe seek مُوعِديناthose threatening us
And we were lodged in tents at Dhu Tilal,
toward the living folk, seeking those who threaten us.
