Then Lot, brother of Sodom, came to it,
Lot, brother of Sodom, came to it
When he came to it with right guidance and guided it.
When he came to guide and lead it

The elder then offered daughters,
The old man then offered his daughters
Like gazelles at Ajzaʿ, which you tend.
Like young gazelles, carefully raising them
غَضِبَgrew angry القومُthe people عِندَat ذاكَthat time وَقالواand said

The people grew angry then and said:
The people were angry then and said
'O elder, this proposal we reject.'
O old man, we refuse this proposal

The people settled upon their plan, and an old woman—
The people united and an old woman
God frustrated her endeavor and rebuked her.
May God foil her effort and erase it
أَرسَلَsent اللَهُGod عِندَat ذاكَthat time عَذاباًa punishment

God then sent a punishment;
Then God sent punishment upon them
He made the earth's underside its upper side.
Making the earth's bottom its top

And pelted it with a storm of stones, then with clay,
And pelted it with stones then clay
Edged and marked, when He pelted it.
Inscribed with letters, when He pelted it

Deliverer of the virtuous one from Noah's ship,
Rescue the benevolent from Noah's ship
On the day Lebanon perished to its farthest reaches.
The day Lebanon disappeared from its rear

His oven gushed forth and surged with water,
So it sailed and overflowed with water
Which overflowed above the mountains until it overtopped them.
Overflowing the mountains until it rose above them
قِيلَit was said للعَبدِto the servant سِرgo فَسارَso he went وَبِاللَهِand by God

The servant was told, 'Go'; he went, and by God's aid
The servant was told, “Travel”, so he traveled, and by God
It made its passage and its night journey through the terror.
His journey over the awe and its plateau

It was said, 'Disembark: the ship has brought you to rest upon
He was told “Descend for the ship has carried you to
A towering summit, its anchorage.'
The top of a towering, docking peak”
أَلاbehold كُلُevery شَيءٍthing هالِكٌperishing غَيرَexcept رَبِّناour Lord
وَلِلَّهِand to God belongs مِيراثُthe inheritance of الَّذيthat which كانَwas فانِياperishable
Behold, everything perishes except our Lord,
Behold, all things perish except our Lord
And to God belongs the inheritance of whatever was perishable.
And to God belongs the inheritance of what is bound to perish

He is its guardian, beyond every other guardianship;
He has guardianship over all guardianships
If He wills, they will all cease to be allies.
If He wills, they altogether perish in an instant

And if anything is enduring and long-lived,
And if something endures and lives long
Reflect: you will find God abiding above it.
Contemplate and you will find God above it, remaining

His is what you have seen with the discerning eye, and above it
Above what the seeing eye has seen and above it
Is God's heaven, above seven heavens.
The heavens of God, above the seven heavens

Behold, no man will be missed by his Lord's mercy,
Behold, your Lord's mercy will not elude a person
Even if he lay seventy valleys beneath the earth.
Even if he were under seventy valleys

Exalted is He; mercy from God reaches him,
A mercy will come and reach him from God
And his praise flourishes among creation,
And his praise in the wilderness will be fresh

Like the mercy shown to Noah when he boarded a ship,
Like the mercy of Noah, the day he anchored
For his followers, who were eight in all.
A ship for his followers - they were eight
فَلَمّاand when اِستَنارَlit up اللَهُGod تَنُّورَthe oven of أَرضِهِHis earth

And when God lit the oven of His earth,
So when God ignited His earth with light
It gushed forth, and the water scoured the earth.
The water gushed on the ground, flowing

Rising in a stream, its humming
Were the squeal of great pulleys drawing water-buckets back,
Like the humming of spindles retrieving treasures

On the back of a dark sea—unprepared for a rider was
On the back of a vast expanse, not traversed by riders
Its night passage—and clouds cloaked the water in darkness.
Its plateau, and clouds that clothed the water, gathering

So its days there came to seven,
With it were days, then seven
And six nights, unceasing, stretching on.
And six consecutive, constantly rainy nights

It cleaves onward with them, speeding under the finest command,
Breaking through them, plunging with excellent steering
As though a guide and sailors were aboard.
As if it had a guide and harbors upon it

And al-Judi was its terminus and goal,
For it the generous had limits and bounds
And its waves began to draw away from it.
And in the morning, its surging was slackened

And the dove's companions felt no fear
Those with the dove were not afraid
On the morning it left them, drawing in its inner wing feathers,
The next morning, it embraced the shores

As a messenger for them, while God orders His affairs,
A messenger for them - and God governs His command -
Showing them whether the garment could be seen exposed.
Clarifying whether the dress will be friendly again

It returned with a cluster of fruit, a clear sign,
So it came back with an evident sign,
And the patch of clay on it began to run
And from it the place of clay began flowing

Over its beak; then it asked for its neck-ring as a gift,
On its beak, and she begged and then her neckband
And said, 'Take heed: do not let the neck-ring wear out,
And said, “Do not make the neckband miserable

That strikes when I follow my neckband and dye

And let my adornment plunge to adornment, that they see me”
