The son of Judʿān ibn ʿAmr knew

that one day he would depart,

and travel on a distant journey

    from which no traveler returns.

So his cooking pots in his courtyard

are brimful for the guest, overflowing.

Their sides show through the bursting

of the boiling within them and the rumbling.

So they seemed, with their heat

and what filled them, like rival co-wives.

And with their contents they seemed like ʿUraynah

    in its reaches, and Hājir:

foam and rumbling, like the rumbling

of camel bulls when they challenge one another.

He outstripped all claims to glory

in excellence, as the clans well know.

And he rose as high as the sun,

until no rival of his could vie with him in glory.

The sons of Fihr submitted to him,

from the descendants of Kaʿb and ʿĀmir.

    بِكُم يُنافِرُ مَن يُنافِر

    You are the generous one, son of the generous one;

whoever vies in glory does so through you all.

Your forefathers are lofty men of weighty judgment,

    open-handed, the very best.

And when their lightning flashes are sighted,

their rain-giving palms pour out bounty.

    No tract that holds them

belongs to drought, nor even borders it.

A people whose fortresses are spearheads,

    and reins, and cleaving swords.

They settled the valley flats; distinction came

through them to the inner lands and the outer.
