وَالصوفَّand wool نَجتَزُّهُwe shear it ماhow أَدفأَwarm الوَبَرُthe animal hair
And cotton we sow in her, then wear it;
We will plant cotton and wear it as clothes
And wool we shear—how warm the animal hair is!
We will shear wool to warm us when fur is not enough
هِىَshe القَرارُthe dwelling فَماso not نَبغيwe seek لَهاfor her بَدَلاa substitute
ماhow أَرحَمَmerciful الأَرضَthe earth إِلاّexcept أَنَّناthat we كُفُرُungrateful
She is our dwelling; we seek no substitute for her.
This is home, we want no other place
How merciful the earth is—yet we are ungrateful!
How cruel the land except that we disbelieved
وَطَعنَةُand a thrust اللِthe spear فيinto الأَعداءِthe enemies نافِذَةٌpenetrating

And the spear's thrust into enemies pierces deep;
God's thrust at enemies always hits its mark
It baffles physicians; probes cannot cope with it.
It tires all doctors, no armor can stop it
مِنهاfrom her خُلِقناwe were created وَكانَتand had been أُمُناour mother خُلِقَتcreated

From her we were created, and our mother had been created;
We were created from this land, our mother was shaped from it
And we are her children, if only we were grateful.
We are her sons, if only we were grateful
وَيومُand the day مَوعِدُهُمtheir appointed time أَنto يُحشَرواthey be gathered زُمراًin throngs

يَومُthe day التَغابُنِmutual loss إِذwhen لاnot يَنفَعُavails الحَذَرُcaution
And the day appointed for them to be gathered in throngs
On the day they are herded into groups
Is the Day of Mutual Loss, when caution is of no avail.
The day of mutual loss when caution is in vain
مُستَوسِقينَgathered together مَعَwith الداعيthe summoner كَأَنَّهُمas though they were

Gathered together with the summoner, as though they were
Asking for water like locusts blown by the wind scattering
A swarm of locusts, swept along by the wind and scattering.
Brought out on a flat, vast, barren plain
وَأُبرِزواand they were brought forth بِصَعيدٍonto a plain مُستَوٍlevel جُرُزٍbarren
وَأُنزِلَand was sent down العَرشُthe Throne وَالميزانُand the Balance وَالزُبُرُand the scriptures
And they were brought forth onto a level, barren plain;
The Throne is set down, so too the Scales and the Books
And the Throne, the Balance, and the scriptures were sent down.
Judged for what none of them had ever reckoned
وَحوسِبواand they were called to account بِالَذيfor what لَمnot يُحصِهِhad tallied it أَحَدٌanyone
مِنهُمamong them وَفيand in مِثلِthe like of ذاكَthat اليَومِthe day مُعتَبَرُa lesson
And they were called to account for what no one had tallied
Some joyful, pleased with their resurrection
Among them; in a day like that there is a lesson.
Others disobeyed, so Hellfire their home
فَمِنهُمso among them فَرِحٌjoyful راضٍcontent بِمَبعَثِهِwith his resurrection
وَآخَرونَand others عَصَواdisobeyed مَأواهُمُtheir abode السَقَرُSaqar
So among them is one joyful, content with his resurrection;
Their keeper will say "Did no warner come to you?"
And others disobeyed; their abode is Saqar.
They will say "Yes, but the grandees led us astray
يَقولُsays خُزّانُهُمtheir keepers ماwhat كانَwas عِندَكُمُwith you

Their keepers say, 'What was there among you?
The length of this life and age deceived us"
Had no warners come to you from your Lord?'
"Stay in God's punishment. For you chains, shackles and flames"
قالواthey said بَلىyes فَأَطَعناthen we obeyed سادَةًmasters بَطَرواgrew insolent
وَغَرَّناand deceived us طولُthe length هَذاthis العَيشِlife وَالعُمُرُand the lifespan
They said, 'Yes; then we obeyed masters who grew insolent,
And they were destroyed by targeting their rear
And the length of this life, and our years, deluded us.'
They could not defend or save themselves
قالواthey said اُمكُثواremain فيin عَذابِthe torment اللَهِof God
ماnot لَكُمُfor you إِلاexcept السَلاسِلُthe chains وَالأَغلالُand the shackles وَالسُعُرُand the blazing fires
They said, 'Remain in God's torment;
Such is their life, they will not leave it
You have nothing but chains, shackles, and blazing fires.'
However long they stay, cry or complain
وَأُهلِكواand they were destroyed بِعَذابٍby a torment خَصَّsingled out دابِرُهُمtheir last remnant
فَماso not اِستَطاعواthey were able لَهُagainst it صَرفاًwarding off وَلاnor اِنتَصَرواthey defended themselves
And they were destroyed by a torment that struck their last remnant;
Others on the Heights hoping for a Garden
So they could not turn it aside, nor defend themselves.
Encircled by pomegranates and greenery
فَذاكَso that عَيشُهُمtheir life لاnot يَبرَحونَthey depart بِهِfrom it
طولَthe duration of المَقامِthe stay وَإِنand even if ضَجَّواthey cry out وَإِنand even if ضَجَرواthey grow weary
So that is their life; they do not depart from it,
On the Merciful's provision, their sins pardoned
Throughout their stay, even if they cry out and even if they grow weary.
Erasing their misdeeds and heavy burdens
وَآخَرونَand others عَلىon الأَعرافِthe Heights قَدhave طَمِعواhoped
بِجَنَّةٍfor a garden حَفَّهاsurrounded it الرُمانُthe pomegranates وَالخَضرُand the greenery
And others on the Heights have set their hopes
All people are God's subjects under His control
On a garden ringed with pomegranates and greenery.
He is the Subjugator over earth, the Veiler
مِنهُمُamong them رِجالٌmen عَلىupon الرَحمَنِthe All-Merciful رَِزقُهُمُtheir sustenance
مُكَفَّرٌexpiated عَنهُمُfor them الأَخباثُevil deeds وَلوَزَرُand the burden of sin
Among them are men whose sustenance rests with the All-Merciful;
None will remain except by God's leave
Their evil deeds and burden of sin are expiated.
Only heaven, earth, and disbelief
إِنَindeed الأَنامَcreatures رَعاياsubjects اللَهِof God كُلَّهُمُall of them
هوَHe السَلَيطَطُthe Sovereign فَوقَabove الأَرضِthe earth مُستَطِرُholding sway
Indeed, all creatures are God's subjects;
If there were any way out, all would be shattered
He is the Sovereign, holding sway above the earth.
Brought to life by God with iron rods
وَلَيسَand not يَبقىendures لِوجهِbefore the face of اللَهِGod مُختَلَقٌa created thing
إِلاّexcept السَماءَthe sky وَإِلّاand except الأَرضِthe earth وَالكَفَرُand the mountains
And no created thing endures before God's face,
The learned is not like the ignorant of piety
Except the sky, and except the earth and the mountains.
Nor the seeing like the blind, devoid of sight
لَوif كانَthere were مُنفَلِتٌone escaping كانَتit would be قَساقِسَةٌpriests

If anyone could escape, it would be priests;
Ask people about what you do not know
God brings them to life, with the scriptures in their hands.
When blindness comes, the informed can enlighten.
وَلَيسَand not ذوone possessing العِلمِknowledge بِالتَقوىof piety كَجاهِلِهاlike one ignorant of it
وَلاnor البَصيرُthe sighted كأَعمىlike a blind man ماnot لَهُfor him بَصَرُsight
And one versed in piety is not like one ignorant of it,
Nor is the sighted like a blind man with no sight.
فَاِستَخبِرِso ask الناسَthe people عَمّاabout what أَنتَyou جاهِلُهُignorant of it

So ask people about what you do not know;
When you are blind, information may dispel blindness.
