Every life, even if it endures for an age—

its final outcome is to pass away.

Would that I had been, before what has become clear to me,

on the mountain peaks, tending ibex.

So set death before your eyes, and beware

the ghoul of time; indeed, time has a ghoul,

whose gaze reaches lions and wild goats,

and the fettered young one at the landmark,

and the gazelle’s weak young, and the fleeing gazelle,

and the frail, twin-born, long-necked gazelle.

    شابَ فيهِ الصَغيرُ شَيباً طَويلاً

    Indeed, the Day of Reckoning is momentous;

on it, the little child grows grey, with long-lasting greyness.
