قُمrise ياO نَدَميmy drinking companion إِلىto الشُمولِthe wine
قَدalready نِمتَyou slept عَنthrough لَيلِكَyour night الطَويلِlong
Rise, my drinking companion, to the wine.
Arise, my regret, to encompassment,
You have slept through your long night.
You have slept away your long night.
أَماdo ... not? تَرىyou see النَجمَthe star قَدalready تَبَدّىhas appeared
وَهَمَّand was about to بِهَرامُBahrām بِالأَفولِto set
Do you not see that the star has appeared,
Do you not see the star has shone forth
and Bahrām is about to set?
And Aldebaran thoughts of setting?
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were عَضِبَsharp الِسانِof tongue عَهديas I remember
فَرُحتُso I became ذاpossessing مِنطِقٍspeech كَليلِdull
You were sharp-tongued, as I remember;
You were hot-tongued in time past:
so I became dull of speech.
Now I am become of speech so slight.
مَنwhoever عاقَرَquaffed الراحَthe wine أَخرَستَهُyou silenced him
وَلَمand did not يُجِبhe answer مَنطِقَthe speech السَؤولِof the persistent questioner
Whoever drank wine, you silenced him,
He who denied rest, you struck him dumb,
and he did not answer the questioner's words.
Nor answered the questioning of the asker.
