ياO خُلَّتيmy intimate friend وَصَفِيَّتيand my chosen companion وَعَذابيand my torment
يا خُلَّتي وَصَفِيَّتي وَعَذابي
ماليwhat is the matter with me? كَتَبتُI wrote فَلَمyet did not تَرُدَّyou send back جَوابيa reply to me
مالي كَتَبتُ فَلَم تَرُدَّ جَوابي
O my intimate friend, my chosen companion, and my torment!
O my confidante, my companion, my torment,
Why is it that I wrote, yet you sent me no reply?
Why have I written you, yet no reply from you,
خَنَتِyou betrayed المَواثِقَthe pledges أَمor لَقيتِyou met حَواسِداًenvious women
خَنَتِ المَواثِقَ أَم لَقيتِ حَواسِداً
يَهوَيَنthey desire هَجريmy abandonment أَمor مَلَّلتِyou grew weary of عِتابيmy reproaches
يَهوَيَن هَجري أَم مَلَّلتِ عِتابي
Have you betrayed the pledges, or met envious women
Have you betrayed your promises, or have you met envious foes,
Who wish me forsaken—or have you grown weary of my reproaches?
Who rejoice at my estrangement, or are you wearied of my reproaches?
