وَإِيّايَ هَذا في الهَوى لي نافِعُ
Is not Sulayma beneath a roof that shelters her
Is not Sulayma sheltered beneath a roof that shields her,
and me? This benefits me in love.
While I have this passion for her that profits me naught?
وَيَلبَسُهاand clothes her اللَيلُthe night البَهيمُpitch-black إِذاwhen دَجىit grows dark
وَيَلبَسُها اللَيلُ البَهيمُ إِذا دَجى
وَتُبصِرُand she sees ضَوءَthe light of الفَجرِdawn وَالفَجرُand dawn ساطِعُshining brightly
وَتُبصِرُ ضَوءَ الفَجرِ وَالفَجرُ ساطِعُ
And pitch-black night clothes her when it grows dark,
The mindless night envelops her when it grows dark,
And she sees the light of dawn while dawn shines bright.
And she sees the light of dawn when bright dawn breaks.

تَدوسُ بِساطاً قَد أَراهُ وَأَنثَني

She treads a carpet that I may see, and I turn back
She treads a carpet I have seen and touched
to tread it with my foot; all this intercedes for me.
With my feet, trod by all who support me.
