أَذَلُّI humble myself لِمَنbefore the one whom أَهوىI love لِأُدرِكَso that I may attain عِزَّةًhonor
أَذَلُّ لِمَن أَهوى لِأُدرِكَ عِزَّةً
وَكَمand how much عِزَّةٍhonor قَدindeed نالَهاattained it المَرءُa person بِالذُلِّthrough abasement
وَكَم عِزَّةٍ قَد نالَها المَرءُ بِالذُلِّ
I humble myself before the one I love to attain honor.
How abject is he who loves to gain honor
And how much honor a person has attained through abasement!
And how much honor can a man gain through abasement
فَلَوso if كُنتُI were أَسلوهُI forget him لِسوءِbecause of the evil of فاعِلِهِhis doer (apparently intended: his conduct)
فَلَو كُنتُ أَسلوهُ لِسوءِ فاعِلِهِ
لَقَدsurely كانَthere would be فيin إِقصائِهِhis exclusion ليof me ماsomething that يُسليmakes one forget
لَقَد كانَ في إِقصائِهِ لي ما يُسلي
If I could forget him because of his ill conduct,
If I were to blame it on the wrongdoer’s evil
His shunning me would surely be enough to make me forget.
There would be solace for me in blaming him
