لاno حُزنَsorrow إِلّاexcept دونَless than حُزنٍsorrow نالَنيbefell me
لا حُزنَ إِلّا دونَ حُزنٍ نالَني
يَومَon the day of الفِراقِthe parting وَقَدand already غَدَوتُI had set out مُوَدِّعاbidding farewell
يَومَ الفِراقِ وَقَد غَدَوتُ مُوَدِّعا
There is no sorrow but it pales beside the sorrow that befell me:
Every sorrow falls short of the sorrow that befell me
the day of parting, when I went forth to bid farewell.
On the day of parting, when I had set out to bid farewell.
فَإِذاthen, behold الأَحِبَّةُthe loved ones قَدalready تَوَلَّتhad departed عيرُهُمtheir caravan
فَإِذا الأَحِبَّةُ قَد تَوَلَّت عيرُهُم
وَبَقيتُand I remained فَرداًalone والِهاًdistraught مُتَوَجِّعاin pain
وَبَقيتُ فَرداً والِهاً مُتَوَجِّعا
Then suddenly, my loved ones’ caravan had turned away,
Then, behold, the loved ones’ caravan had departed,
and I remained alone—distraught and aching.
And I remained alone, distraught and in pain.
