أَياO رَبِّmy Lord حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen أُصرَعُI am struck down
أَيا رَبِّ حَتّى مَتى أُصرَعُ
وَحَتّامَand for how long أَبكيI weep وَاِستَرجِعُand say, 'To God we belong, and to Him we return'
وَحَتّامَ أَبكي وَاِستَرجِعُ
O my Lord, how long shall I be struck down?
Oh Lord, how long will I languish
And how long shall I weep and say, 'To God we belong, and to Him we return'?
And weep till I'm exhausted?
لَقَدindeed قَطَّعَhas severed اليَأسُdespair حَبلَcord الرَجاءِhope
لَقَد قَطَّعَ اليَأسُ حَبلَ الرَجاءِ
فَماso there is no فيin وِصالِكِunion with you (feminine) ليfor me مَطمَعُhope; prospect
فَما في وِصالِكِ لي مَطمَعُ
Despair has indeed severed the cord of hope,
Despair has severed the rope of hope -
So I have no hope of union with you.
I have no more desire for your union.
بُليتُI was afflicted بِقَلبٍwith a heart ضَعيفِweak القُوىstrength; powers
بُليتُ بِقَلبٍ ضَعيفِ القُوى
وَعَينٍand an eye تَضُرُّdoes harm وَلاand does not تَقَعُfall
وَعَينٍ تَضُرُّ وَلا تَقَعُ
I am afflicted with a heart weak in strength,
I'm afflicted with a heart weak in strength
And an eye that harms and does not fall.
And an eye that hurts but cannot see.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذَكَرتُI recalled الهَوىlove; passion وَالمُنىand hopes
إِذا ما ذَكَرتُ الهَوى وَالمُنى
تَحَدَّرَstreamed down مِنfrom جَفنِهاits eyelid أَربُعُabodes; encampments (literal; unclear here)
تَحَدَّرَ مِن جَفنِها أَربُعُ
Whenever I recall love and hopes,
When I recall passion and wishes
Abodes stream down from its eyelid [literal wording; unclear in context].
Four teardrops fall from its eyelids.
