شَعفُardent love الفُؤادِthe heart بِجارَةِfor the female neighbor الجَنبِthe side
فَظَلَلتُso I remained ذاfull of حُزنٍgrief وَذاand full of كَرَبِanguish
The heart's ardent love for the woman next door—
The heart rejoices in the neighbor next door
So I remained full of grief and anguish.
So I lingered in sadness and distress
ياO جارَتيmy female neighbor أَمسَيتِyou have become مالِكَةًmistress
رِقّيmy bondage وَغالِبَتيand my conqueror عَلىover لُبّيmy reason
O my neighbor, you have become mistress
My neighbor, you have become my mistress
Of my bondage, and the conqueror of my reason.
My concern, overpowering my mind
وَأَناand I الذَليلُthe abased one لِمَنto the one whom بُليتُI was afflicted بِهِwith him
حَسبيenough for me بِهِwith him عاذِلَتيmy female reproacher حَسبيenough for me
And I am abased before the one with whom I am afflicted.
While I remain submissive to the one I'm afflicted by
He is enough for me, my reproacher—enough for me.
It's enough that my reproacher reproaches me
أَمّاas for النَهارُthe day فَفيهِthen in it شُغلُoccupation تَحَمُّلٍendurance
وَاللَيلُand the night يَجلِبُbrings ليto me هَوىlonging الحُبِّlove
As for the day, it holds the task of endurance;
The day brings constant toil and suffering
And night brings me the longing of love.
And the night brings the pangs of passion's love
