The antelope and the crow brought me good news

Welcome to the one who says: the crow

He said to me: Indeed, my good fortune is near

It has come close to happen

I said: How can that be near

With the fortresses and gates barring the way

Blessed be the wine, the cups, and the palace

    That ladders cannot reach

If we were to enter the palace like trapped gazelles

Behind firmly shut and noisy gates

You risked your soul for me so beware

The guards here are angry at you

They swore if they find you, you won’t taste water

And when able, they are wolves

I said: The guard may slip or the guards may sleep

Or a revolt against them may happen

    And God may grant something

With no anxiety for the lover

Go back, give her my greetings

Then return our reply, oh maiden

Tell her what I experienced and say

It is right for the noble lover to be rewarded

You are a man whose concern when night falls

Is being intoxicated for your sake

I do not smell basil except with my nostril

    As only dogs smell carrion

Many blame me but saw no flaw in me

    While they are sorrowful liars

He deceived God when white hair befell him

    And his youth left him

He tells people to show piety yet forgets

While signs of great sin cloak him

O you who declare all my flesh lawful to you

Behind my back and without accountability

Wake up, you have no knowledge

    Do not sleep, o critic

You displace people using the book, so why

When you blame me, does the book not deter you

You are no pious ascetic nor an honored

    One of flawless lineage

I and she who threw you out loathingly

With the dust covering your shoe

Will blame your foolish opinion of us

When you remain weeping over your honor
