نادَتكَshe called to you وَالعيسُand the pale camels سِراعٌswift بِناbearing us
مَهبَطَat the descent of ذيDhu (possessor of) دَورانَDawran فَالقاعِthen al-Qaʿ (the plain)
She called out to you as the pale camels sped us onward,
She called to you while the pale camels sped with us,
down from Dhū Dawarān, then into the open plain.
at the descent of Dhu Dawran, then al-Qaʿ.
قالَتshe said وَعَيناهاand her two eyes تَجودانِهاboth showering her with tears
صوحِبتَmay you have good company وَاللَهُand God هُوَHe الراعيthe guardian
She spoke while both her eyes streamed:
She said, her eyes bathing her in tears:
“May companionship attend you—and God is the guardian.
May you have good company; God Himself is the guardian.
ياO اِبنَson of شُرَيحٍShurayh لاdo not تُضِعlet slip سِرَّناour secret
قَدindeed كُنتَyou have been عِنديin my eyes غَيرَnot مِضياعِcareless with a trust
O son of Shurayḥ, do not let our secret be lost;
O son of Shurayh, do not let our secret slip;
I had known you as no one who lets things go to waste.”
indeed, in my eyes you have been no careless man.
لَوif أَنَّهاthat she بيعَتwere sold لَأَغلَيتُهاthen I would bid high for her
وَيليwoe to me بِهاon her account سِلعَةَa piece of merchandise مُبتاعِa buyer
Had she been sold, I would have paid dearly for her—
If she were put up for sale, I would bid high for her;
woe is me for her, merchandise for a buyer!
woe to me for her—what a purchase for a buyer!
