Indeed, I bring a gift of praise, and make my way
I am inclined towards profuse praise, aiming it
with it to a loyal cousin, Shams ibn Malik.
At the son of the uncle of truthfulness, the sun of Malik's son,
أَهُزُّI shake بِهِwith it فيin نَدوَةِthe assembly of الحَيِّthe clan عِطفَهُhis side
أَهُزُّ بِهِ في نَدوَةِ الحَيِّ عِطفَهُ

كَما هَزَّ عِطفي بِالهِجانِ الأَوارِكِ
With it I make his side sway in the clan's assembly,
I shake with it in the assembly of the living his compassion
as he made mine sway with purebred white camels browsing on arak.
As I shook my compassion with odes of palm trees.

Lean of belly, he divides his provisions between himself
Of gentle character, he shares provision evenly
and the wolf equally, as a partner shares.
Between himself and the wolf sharing with the participant.

Little does he complain of the distress that befalls him,
He who complains little of misfortune befalls him,
many his desires, diverse his destinations and paths.
Abundant in love, diverse in determination and ways.

جَحيشاً وَيَعروري ظُهورَ المَهالِكِ
He spends the day in one trackless desert and reaches evening in another,
He spends the night in Mecca and wakes up somewhere else,
alone, and rides bareback upon the backs of mortal perils.
Racing the backs of vanishing realms.

بِمُنخَرِقٍ مِن شَدِّهِ المُتَدارِكِ
And he outruns the wind's vanguard wherever he heads,
And he outruns the delegation of the wind from whence it originates
with a headlong rush of his unbroken running.
With burster from its intense overtaking.

لَهُ كالِئٌ مِن قَلبِ شَيحانَ فاتِكِ
When sleep's drowsiness stitches his eyes shut, there still remains
When sleep's veil covers his eyes, his heart keeps
for him a sentry: the heart of a wary, deadly man.
A burning coal from the passion of a piercing fate.

When the first attackers appear, his rush is
When the vanguards of foes appear, it incites him
to draw a keen-edged, severing sword.
To a bag of swords from the striking Western blades.

When he swings it into a foe's bone, there beam
When it shakes him against a massive spear, the grinning
the molars of death's laughing mouths.
Jaws of deaths laugh, amused.

He sees solitude as congenial companionship, and finds his way
He sees desolation as company, the inanimate as intimate, guided
where the mother of the interwoven stars has found hers.
By where the mother of stars took guidance, Pleiades.
