شَنِئتُ العَقرَ عَقرَ بَني شَليلٍ

شَنِئتُ العَقرَ عَقرَ بَني شَليلٍ

إِذا هَبَّت لِقارِإِها الرِياحُ

إِذا هَبَّت لِقارِإِها الرِياحُ

I loathed al-ʿAqr, the ʿAqr of the sons of Shalīl,

I despise the tribe of Banu Shalil

When the winds blew at their appointed time.

When the winds blow to their dwellings

كَرِهتُ بَني جَذيمَةَ إِذ ثَرَونا

كَرِهتُ بَني جَذيمَةَ إِذ ثَرَونا

قَفا السَلَفَينِ وَاِنتَسبوا فَباحوا

قَفا السَلَفَينِ وَاِنتَسبوا فَباحوا

I disliked the sons of Jadhīmah when they outnumbered us,

I hate Banu Jadhimah when they became wealthy

In the wake of the two forebears, and declared their lineage, making it known.

Following in the footsteps of past generations, boasting of their ancestry

إِذا خَلَّفتُ باطِنَتي سَرارٍ

إِذا خَلَّفتُ باطِنَتي سَرارٍ

وَبَطنِ هُضاضَ حَيثُ غَدا صُباحُ

وَبَطنِ هُضاضَ حَيثُ غَدا صُباحُ

When I left behind the two inner reaches of Sarār

When I leave behind secrets in my inner self

And of the valley of Huḍāḍ, where Ṣubāḥ set out in the morning.

And the belly of Hudhadh where Subah appears
