إِنَّكَindeed you لاnot بَزّاًgear مَنَعتَyou defended وَلاnor يَداًa hand
وَإِنَّand indeed السُيوفَthe swords بِالأَكُفِّin the hands شَوارِعُlevelled
You defended neither gear nor hand,
while swords were levelled in men's hands,
غَداةَon the morning when تَقولُyou say قَدalready مَلَكتُمyou have prevailed فَأَسجِحواso be lenient
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِماto whatever أَسلَكتُمونيyou have led me into لَتابِعُam surely a follower
that morning you said, 'You have prevailed; so be lenient,
and I shall surely follow whatever course you set me on.'
فَوَso, by اللاهِGod لَولاwere it not for اِبناthe two sons of كِلابٍKilab وَعامِرٍand Amir
بَعَواthey committed أَمرَa matter of غَيّاتٍacts of folly هُمُthey وَالأَقارِعُand the Aqariʿ
So, by God, but for the two sons of Kilab and Amir—
they and the Aqariʿ committed a deed of folly—
I would surely have resolved on أَمراًa course of action لَيسَthere is not فيهِin it هَوادَةٌleniency
وَلاnor غُصَّةٌa choking pang وَلَيسَand there is not فيهِin it تَنازُعُcontention
I would surely have resolved on a course allowing no leniency,
no choking pang, and no contention within it.
