Shall I mourn any youth after the man slain at al-ʿAwṣ

and his companion? Or can a night visitor hope for provisions?

Shall I drive off booty at night's end, seeking

a day's meager sustenance, for fear that hindrances may stop me?

ʿAmr was indeed a youth you struck down; his cloak seemed

to hang high on a sarḥ tree among Dūmah's sarḥ trees.

I shall surely drive off booty, or we shall pay a visit with young men,

with brown spear-shafts and gleaming swords in their right hands.

Kindlers of war, disheveled, whose eyes are like

a blaze of ghaḍā wood, with split logs lying upon it.

So count the sacred months, then see for yourselves

    a slain tribesman—or a maiden you embrace.
