    I strove to give thanks for what you did for me,

    Yet I fell short, overwhelmed, though I am truly grateful.

    For you bestow kindness on me without prompting,

    And you deem paltry what I considered so abundant.

    So I return envied, and you return with that

    Whose beginning and end lie in noble deeds.

    And I have composed verse about you, but it is voiced by

    Noble deeds of the kind that are built up, and glories.

    يُرادُ بِها ضَربٌ مِن الشِعرِ آخِرُ

    My verses fall short of them, not encompassing their qualities;

    Another kind of poetry is sought for them.
