    and horses round up the herds of livestock.

    And from Wāʾil's two sons we rose

    to glory's crown and nobility's forefront,

    from the sons of Bakr, when their descent is traced,

    and the sons of Taghlib, smiters of champions.

    When men defend their own, we defend our folk,

    radiant-faced, renowned for generosity,

    في الضَريباتِ مُتِرّاتِ العُصُم

    with keen swords you see sink deep

    into the bodies they strike, shearing off wrists;

    أَعوَجِيّاتٍ عَلى الشَأوِ أُزُم

    and huge-framed, hard-hoofed stallions,

    of Aʿwaj's stock, relentless on the course;

    and smooth-shafted lances, and lean horses,

    gaunt from long champing at their bits.

    hands rise above them with whip-stubs,
