وَتَقولُand she says عاذِلَتيmy female reprover وَلَيسَand not لَهاshe has
بِغَدٍof tomorrow وَلاnor ماwhat بَعدَهُafter it عِلمُknowledge
And my reprover says, though she has no
My critic says to me, though she knows not
knowledge of tomorrow or what comes after it:
What tomorrow or the day after holds,
إِنَّindeed الثَراءَwealth هُوَit الخُلودُimmortality وَإِنَّand indeed
المَرءَa man يُكرِبُhastens يَومَهُhis day (of death) العُدمُpoverty
“Wealth is immortality, and indeed
That wealth alone makes one immortal. But
poverty hastens a man's day of death.”
Man's day is darkened by impending death.
وَلَئِنand even if بَنيتُI built إِلىup to المُشَقَّرِal-Mushaqqar فيamong
هَضبٍrocky heights تُقَصِّرُfall short دونَهُof reaching it العُصمُwhite-footed mountain goats
And even if I built up to al-Mushaqqar, among
Though I erect a lofty palace where
rocky heights beyond the reach of white-footed mountain goats,
None can ascend save mounting eagles,
لَتُنَقِّبَنwill surely search عَنّيfor me المَنِيَّةُdeath إِنَّindeed
اللَهَGod لَيسَthere is no لِحُكمِهِover His decree حُكمُjudgment
Death would surely seek me out; indeed,
Yet death will excavate in search of me,
God's decree admits no overriding judgment.
For God's decree cannot reversed be.
