خَليلَيَّmy two friends لاno وَاللَهِby God ماnot القَلبُthe heart سالِمٌsound
خَليلَيَّ لا وَاللَهِ ما القَلبُ سالِمٌ
وَإِنand even if ظَهَرَتappeared مِنّيfrom me شَمائِلُtraits صاحِa sober man
وَإِن ظَهَرَت مِنّي شَمائِلُ صاحِ
My two friends—no, by God, my heart is not sound,
My beloved, no - by God - my heart is not at peace
even if I display the bearing of a sober man.
Though my face appears serene to those who see
وَإِلّاand if not فَماthen what باليmy condition وَلَمand did not أَشهَدِI witness الوَغىbattle
وَإِلّا فَما بالي وَلَم أَشهَدِ الوَغى
أَبيتُI spend the night كَأَنّيas though I مُثقَلٌweighed down بِجِراحِwith wounds
أَبيتُ كَأَنّي مُثقَلٌ بِجِراحِ
Otherwise, what ails me, though I have not witnessed battle,
How else could I be when I have not witnessed the battle?
that I spend the night as though weighed down with wounds?
I lie as though laden with wounds
