أخلصتَyou were devoted إخلاصَthe devotion of المحبِّthe lover المغرمِlove-stricken
ووفيتَand you kept faith حتّىuntil جزتَyou surpassed حَدَّthe limit of تَوَهُّميmy imagining
You showed the devotion of a love-stricken lover,
You gave loyalty with the utmost devotion of an enamored lover,
And kept faith until you surpassed the bounds of my imagining.
And remained faithful to the extent of surpassing my imagination.
ومنَحتنيand you granted me مكنونَthe concealed part of حُبِّكyour love خالصاًpure
مَحْضاًunalloyed مَشُوباًmingled بالمفَاصِلِwith the joints والدَّمِand the blood
And you granted me your hidden love, pure,
You granted me the essence of your pure love,
Unalloyed, mingled with joints and blood.
Utterly unadulterated, mingled with joints and blood.
والمرءُand a man أكرمُnoblest ماwhen يكونhe is إذاwhen غَدَاhe becomes
وَقْفاًwholly devoted علىto عَهدِthe covenant of الحِفاظloyalty الأقدَمoldest
And a man is at his noblest when he becomes
A man is most honorable when he becomes,
Wholly devoted to the oldest covenant of loyalty.
An adherent to the covenant of the most ancient preservers.
ولِذَاكand for that reason لاnot يَصْفُوis unalloyed الثناءُpraise لفاعلfor one who does
خيراًgood ولاand not يُجْزاهhe is rewarded for it إنif لمnot يُتْممhe completes it
And so praise is not unalloyed for one who does
Thus praise does not become pure for one who does good,
Good, nor is he rewarded for it unless he completes it.
Nor is he recompensed unless he completes it.
فأقلُّso the least of حَقِّكwhat is due to you ليسdoes not يَبلغُreach كُنْهَهُits essence
وَصْفيmy description لهof it ولوand even if انّهit is مِلْءُthe fullness of الفَمthe mouth
So even the least of your due cannot be fully conveyed
My least right to you does not reach its essence
By my description of it, even if it fills my mouth.
In my description of it, even if my mouth were full.
يَلقاكَmeets you منfrom قلبيmy heart وإنand even if لمnot تَلقَنيyou meet me
وُدَّانِtwo loves مكتومٌconcealed وبادٍand manifest فاعلَمso know
From my heart come to meet you, even if you do not meet me,
It comes to you from my heart even if you do not come to me,
Two loves—one concealed, one manifest—so know this.
A hidden passion and evident doer, so know.
لاno والّذيby Him who بِيديهِin His two hands ماwhat أناI آمِلٌam hoping for
ماnot بِتْنَthey spent the night عنكَaway from you خواطِرِيmy thoughts بالنُّوَّمas sleepers
No, by Him in whose hands lies what I hope for,
No - by Him in Whose hand is my soul - I do not hope
My thoughts have never passed a night asleep, heedless of you.
That my thoughts of you are dispelled through sleep.
فلوso if أنَّthat شخصَكَyour form وَسْطَin the midst of أسَودِthe black part of ناظِريmy eye
ماnot كانwould be طَرْفيmy eye مِنهfrom it بالمتألّمin pain
So if your form were within the black of my eye,
If your image were amidst the blackness of my sight,
My eye would feel no pain from it.
My eye would not be pained by it.
ولقدand indeed سألتُI asked اللهGod ربَّthe Lord of محّمدٍMuhammad
ودعوتُand I prayed فِيكَfor you لهto Him دعاءَthe prayer of الأبكَمthe mute person
And indeed I have asked God, the Lord of Muhammad,
And I asked Allah, Lord of Muhammad,
And prayed to Him for you with a mute man's prayer.
And supplicated to Him for you with the prayer of the mute.
وَغدٌand tomorrow لمِنfor whoever يرجوhopes for السعادةَhappiness فيin غَدٍtomorrow
أَشْهَىmore desirable لهto him منthan يَومِهِhis day المتقدمpreceding
And tomorrow, for one who hopes for happiness tomorrow,
And tomorrow for one who hopes for happiness tomorrow,
Is more desirable to him than his day gone by.
Is more delicious for him than his preceding day.
