كَلَّلْتَyou crowned ودَّكyour affection ليfor me بالبِرّwith kindness والنَّفَلِand bounty
كَلَّلْتَ ودَّك لي بالبِرّ والنَّفَلِ
لماwhen بَعَثْتَyou sent بماwith what أَهْوَىI love مِنof الكِللِthe canopies
لما بَعَثْتَ بما أَهْوَى مِن الكِللِ
You crowned your affection for me with kindness and generous gifts,
You crowned your affection for me with kindness and bounty,
when you sent the canopies I had desired.
When you sent the canopies I love.
وكنتَand you were تنزِلyou dwelt منwithin قلبيmy heart بمنزِلةٍin a place
وكنتَ تنزِل من قلبي بمنزِلةٍ
مَصونةٍprotected ماnot لهاfor it فيin القلبthe heart مِنany مَثَلِequal
مَصونةٍ ما لها في القلب مِن مَثَلِ
And you occupied a place within my heart,
And you already held a place in my heart,
guarded—without equal anywhere in that heart.
Guarded, with no equal in that heart.
فقدso indeed غَداhas become لكfor you قلبيmy heart اليومَtoday أَجمعُهall of it
فقد غَدا لك قلبي اليومَ أَجمعُه
يُصْفيكsincerely gives you ودّاaffection مقيماabiding غيرَnot مُنْتَقِلshifting
يُصْفيك ودّا مقيما غيرَ مُنْتَقِل
Today my heart, all of it, has become yours,
So today my heart, all of it, has become yours,
offering you pure, abiding love that will never shift.
Offering you pure affection, abiding and never shifting.
وماand not أُكافِيكI repay you إلاّexcept عنout of هَوىًlove رَسَخَتْbecame firmly rooted
وما أُكافِيك إلاّ عن هَوىً رَسَخَتْ
أصولُهits roots فيكin you لمnot يَنْقُصْdiminish ولمand not يَحُلchange
أصولُه فيك لم يَنْقُصْ ولم يَحُل
I requite you only from a love whose
And I repay you only out of a love that has put down firm
roots stand firm in you—undiminished and unchanged.
Roots in you, a love that has neither waned nor changed.
فأنتfor you are نِعمexcellent الوليُّthe friend المُستعانُsought for help بِهthrough him
فأنت نِعم الوليُّ المُستعانُ بِه
وخيرُand the best منthose whom وَلَدتbore حَوَّاءُEve مِنof رجلa man
وخيرُ من وَلَدت حَوَّاءُ مِن رجل
You are the finest loyal friend, the one whose aid is sought,
For you are an excellent friend whose help is sought,
and the best man Eve ever bore.
And the best man Eve has borne.
لاmay not زالcease قلبيَmy heart مشتاقاًyearning إليكfor you كماjust as
لا زال قلبيَ مشتاقاً إليك كما
يشتاقyearns قلبُthe heart الهوىof love لِلأَعينِfor the eyes النُّجُلwide
يشتاق قلبُ الهوى لِلأَعينِ النُّجُل
May my heart never cease longing for you, just as
May my heart always yearn for you, as
a lover’s heart longs for wide, beautiful eyes.

خُذْهاtake it وعُذْرِيand my excuse فيfor التقصيرfalling short أنّيthat I قدindeed
خُذْها وعُذْرِي في التقصير أنّي قد
كتبتُهاI wrote it وأناwhile I فِيهاin it علىin عَجَلِhaste
كتبتُها وأنا فِيها على عَجَلِ
