    When I seek to praise you with what you deserve

    of praise, four virtues leave me at a loss:

    ورأى كحدِّ السيفِ بل هو أقطع

    bounty you pour forth when bounty is scarce;

    and judgment like a sword’s edge—indeed, sharper still;

    وطاشت حِجا الأقوام لا يتضعضع

    and forbearance that, when wise men’s forbearance fails

    and people’s minds reel, remains unshaken;

    and radiant character, pure in its sweetness,

    and delicate, like wine softened by mixing with water.

    In a single one of these virtues, the intellect drowns,

    and rhymes are left exhausted and limping.

    وجُودُك طبعٌ ليس فيه تصنّع

    Suffice it for you that people give with affectation,

    while your generosity is innate, without affectation;

    وغيرك للورّاث واللؤمِ يجمع

    and that you amass for eminence and glory,

    while others hoard for heirs and out of meanness;

    and that each day you draw near in humility,

    though you are higher and loftier than al-Jawzāʾ.

    I congratulate you on the feast whose feast you are,

    and the light of its radiant arrival when it shines.

    When I contemplate time, I find it

    giving through your two hands to whom it wills, and withholding.

    Were you not within it, its full moon would not shine,

    nor would the morning sun shine when it rises.

    So accept this from a noble poet who praises you,

    before whom proud rhymes are humbled and submit.

    He has discernment whose arrows have never fallen short

    of the farthest mark, nor do they hold back.

    Yet his poetic verses have now become

    pearls inlaid on the two cloaks of your exalted rank:

    praise so sweet in scent that musk seems

    to waft forth whenever its words are repeated.
