When ambitions enlist me in the pursuit of eminence,
If you use me in seeking knowledge and ambition
the water of lofty honors is cool, ice-cold in my mouth.
The water of virtues is cool and pleasant in my mouth

إذا لم أشيِّد ما بَنَى المجدُ في القِدَمْ
I lay no claim to my forefathers' eminence
I am no pretender to ancestral nobility
if I do not build up what glory built in ancient times.
If I do not build what glory built of old

ومن لم يَسُدْ بالفِعل يوما فما حَلُمْ
Each man has his deeds and his usefulness,
Each person has their deeds and songs
and whoever has never gained eminence through deeds has not grown wise.
Who did no mighty deed in his day is no true man

And sometimes I set out early, while night is grizzled with dawn,
I rose while night was still dark with dawn
and the meadow has camphor whose fragrance the breezes waft,
The meadow scented with wafting camphor breezes

with a blue hawk that fixes upon birds an eye
With bright blue that makes the birds an easy prey
that almost sees what clothing conceals in darkness.
You almost see what clothes hide in the dark

Nor does a hawk disgrace the palm of a noble man
The hawk disdains not the wrist of glorious Majid
accustomed to bearing the hawk, the sword, and the pen.
Used to bearing hawk, sword, and pen

تُقَبَّل في وَسْط النّدى وتُلتثَم
A hand for bounty and generosity at one time, and at another
A hand for munificence and at times for battle
kissed amid the assembly and pressed to lips.
Kissed midst munificence and battle-stained

When the hawk mounts my left hand and leaves an impression
When the hawk-bearer mounts his steed, my heart pounds
with its glances, blazing like a wick,
Moments that flare up like glowing embers

I startle with it a gathered flock of birds,
I startled thereby a flock of birds together
and stain them with blood on every side.
And drenched them in blood on every side

If I have not hunted them, their taste gives me no pleasure,
If I did not hunt them, their taste was not sweet
and I have no craving for meat I have not hunted.
I crave no meat I did not hunt with my spear
