أتانِيَ ما لم أَزْل أَعتقدْ

أتانِيَ ما لم أَزْل أَعتقدْ

به منك من حُسْن حفظ ووُد

به منك من حُسْن حفظ ووُد

What I have always believed in has come to me—

What I never ceased to believe

your good care and affection.

Of your good safekeeping and affection

فساق إليّ وفودَ السرور

فساق إليّ وفودَ السرور

وأذهب عني وُفودَ الكَمَدْ

وأذهب عني وُفودَ الكَمَدْ

So it brought me the delegations of joy

Has come to me, sending joy's delegates

and drove the delegations of grief away from me.

And taking away delegations of gloom.

ولستُ له شاكراً إنني

ولستُ له شاكراً إنني

أرى لك عندي به فضلَ يَدْ

أرى لك عندي به فضلَ يَدْ

And I do not give thanks for it; indeed, I

Yet I cannot thank you, since I see

see in it a favor your hand has bestowed on me,

No special merit of yours in this:

لأنك من طبعك المكرماتُ

لأنك من طبعك المكرماتُ

وصِدقُ الوفاء وشَدُّ العَضُدْ

وصِدقُ الوفاء وشَدُّ العَضُدْ

for noble deeds are in your nature,

It is your nature to be generous

as are true fidelity and the strengthening of the arm.

And truly faithful, firm in your support;

وليس الإخاء الذي بيننا

وليس الإخاء الذي بيننا

ببدْعٍ إذا ما استوى وانعقد

ببدْعٍ إذا ما استوى وانعقد

And the brotherhood between us

Nor is the brotherhood between us

is no strange thing, once it has matured and been bound fast,

Innovation, now that it is fixed and settled,

لأنّا إلى والدٍ واحدٍ

لأنّا إلى والدٍ واحدٍ

تفرُّعُنا حين نُدْعَى وجَد

تفرُّعُنا حين نُدْعَى وجَد

for to a single father

Since we both branched out from one father

and grandfather our branches are traced when we are named.

When we were called into being and found life.

فلو كنتُ أَمِلك سُؤْلِي لَمَا

فلو كنتُ أَمِلك سُؤْلِي لَمَا

رضِيتُ سواك خليلي أَحَدْ

رضِيتُ سواك خليلي أَحَدْ

So if I could have my wish, I would not

If I had any say in the matter, I would not

be content with anyone but you, my intimate friend.

Choose anyone but you as my friend.
