أيّwhat a لبٍّmind أَطارهsent it flying واستفزّهand unsettled it
What a heart parting seared and shook!
What heart has separation scorched and shaken?
What a mind it sent flying and unsettled!
What bosom has it fired up and stirred?
أيّwhat دمعtears جرىflowed وقلبand a heart تلظّىblazed

What tears flowed, and what heart blazed!
What tears have flowed, what hearts been seared,
And a heart that separation pierced again and again!
As estrangement's harm within them lurked?

How many suns were brought low at ʿAyn Shams
How many suns, to bid the sun farewell,
by a farewell in which forbearance saw its own helplessness!
Saw wisdom's feebleness unfurled?

وأصابand struck الأسَىsorrow العزاءَsolace فبزهand so overcame it
A scene where youthful passion's rule was tyrannical,
A stance where destiny holds sway
and sorrow struck solace and overcame it.
And grief has overwhelmed all cheer.

Had Kuthayyir seen me there, he would not have
If many saw me there, they'd doubt
doubted that there I was Kuthayyir of ʿAzza.
That I could muster any pride.

The battalions of anguish did not invade me until
No troops of woe o'ercame me, till
they set the rendezvous at Gaza.
They made our trysting place deserted.
فُرْقَةa parting لاnot تزالceases to be فيin العينthe eye دمعاًtears
عندwhen ذكرِيmy remembrance لهاof it وفيand in القلبthe heart حَزَّهa cut
A parting that remains as tears in the eye
A parting that still flows as tears
whenever I recall it, and as a cut in the heart.
When I recall it, and anguish in the heart.
سيدتِيmy lady أحسنُthe loveliest منthose who قدhave مشىwalked

My lady is the loveliest of all who have walked;
My lady walks most gracefully -
likewise, I am the loveliest of all that is worn.
And I walk best when dressed in silk.

ليسis not يُرَىseen سُقْماthrough sickness ولاnor يُلْمَسtouched
In my delicacy, I am like a lover
So gently am I formed, I seem
who, through sickness, is neither seen nor touched.
A lover one can scarcely see or touch.
