فاصِرفso turn away ملامكyour blame عنfrom شَباthe sharp edge الدهِرof time
Time’s vicissitudes are wondrous in nature.
The turns of fate are wondrous
So turn your blame away from time’s sharp edge.
So cease your blame of the fleeting days
كمhow often جادbestowed generously ليto me بلقاءwith a meeting مَنone whom طفقتbegan
فيهfor him المدامعtears وُكّفاًin torrents تجريflow
How often it has granted me a meeting with one
How often has one smiled at me, at whose sight
for whom tears had begun to stream in torrents.
Tears flowed and hands trembled
فشفيتُso I healed باستطلاعby beholding غُرَّتهhis radiant face
قلباًa heart أحرّhotter جوىًin love’s anguish منthan الجمرglowing coals
So, by beholding his radiant face, I healed
Then when his cheek turned pale,
a heart whose longing burned hotter than glowing coals.
I felt a heart hotter than embers

O hour—how blissful it was!
O blissful hour that witnessed
In it, reunion laughed at separation.
Laughter and reunion after estrangement
وَسَعتand strove خطوبُcalamities الدهرof time تخدُمنيserving me
فيمنconcerning the one whom كَلِفْتُI was enamored بهof him ولاand not أدريI know
And time’s calamities strove to serve me
The vicissitudes of fate have served me
concerning the one I adored, though I knew it not.
Regarding one I was destined for unknowingly
لمdid not تلمِسtouch البدرَthe full moon المنيرَradiant يدٌa hand
ولقدand indeed ملأتُI filled يديmy hand منwith البدرthe full moon
No hand has touched the radiant full moon,
No hand has touched the brilliant moon
yet I have indeed filled my hand with the full moon.
Yet my hand was filled by the moon
