ضَمَّخواthey perfumed الريحَthe wind بالعَبِيرِwith perfume وقالواand they said
ضَمَّخوا الريحَ بالعَبِيرِ وقالوا
إنْif تَنَشَّقْتَهاyou breathe it in لِقيتَyou find الوصالاunion
إنْ تَنَشَّقْتَها لِقيتَ الوصالا
They scented the wind with perfume and said:
They scented the wind with perfume and said,
“If you breathe it in, you will find union.
"If you split open, you will find the union."
نَشْرُهاits fragrance نَشْرناour fragrance فإنso if شِئتَyou wish رؤياseeing (continued)
نَشْرُها نَشْرنا فإن شِئتَ رؤيا
ناus (attached to the preceding word) فلاthen do not تَعْدُgo beyond أنto تُلاقِيmeet الهِلالاthe crescent moon
نا فلا تَعْدُ أن تُلاقِي الهِلالا
Its fragrance is our fragrance; so if you wish to see
We spread it as wide as it spreads, so if you wish for a vision,
us, you need only meet the crescent moon.
Behold, do not expect to meet the crescent moon.
قدindeed بَعَثْناwe have sent فيin الريحthe wind والشمسِand the sun والبدْand the full moon (continued)
قد بَعَثْنا في الريح والشمسِ والبدْ
رِcompletion of “full moon” إلىto مُقْلَتَيكyour two eyes مِنّاfrom us مِثالاa likeness
رِ إلى مُقْلَتَيك مِنّا مِثالا
We have sent, in the wind, the sun, and the full
We have sent into the wind, sun, and full moon
moon, a likeness of ourselves to your eyes.
An image of us to your eyes.
فدعِso leave off العذْلَreproach فيconcerning الصدودِkeeping away فإنّاfor we
فدعِ العذْلَ في الصدودِ فإنّا
لاnot نُطِيقُwe can endure الرقيبَthe watcher والعُذَّالاand the reproachers
لا نُطِيقُ الرقيبَ والعُذَّالا
So cease reproaching us for keeping away, for we
Leave off disdain in repelling, for we
cannot endure the watcher and the reproachers.”
Cannot bear a watcher or blamer.
