نفسِيmy soul وكيفand how تَصَبُّرmustering patience المُشْتاقthe yearning lover
نفسِي وكيف تَصَبُّر المُشْتاق
They said, “Parting!”—so I announced the departure of
They said farewell, so I bid my soul farewell,
my soul—and how can a yearning lover muster patience?
How can the longing one show patience?
لولاwere it not for النوىdistance والبينand separation ماnot قطعsevered الهوىpassionate love
لولا النوى والبين ما قطع الهوى
بيدِwith the hand of الصبابةِardent longing أنفسsouls العشاقِthe lovers
بيدِ الصبابةِ أنفس العشاقِ
Were it not for distance and separation, love would not sever
If not for separation and distance, passion
the souls of lovers with the hand of longing.
Would not have been cut by the hands of youth.
أترىdo you think الخطوبmisfortunes تسرّناgladden us منfrom بعدِماafter having
أترى الخطوب تسرّنا من بعدِما
حكمتdecreed بفرقتِناfor our separation بِطيبِwith the sweetness of تلاقِيreunion
حكمت بفرقتِنا بِطيبِ تلاقِي
Do you think misfortunes will gladden us, after
Do you think, after you ruled to separate us,
decreeing our separation, with the sweetness of reunion?
Afflictions make me happy with cordiality?
