قالواthey said الرحيلdeparture لخمسةٍin five days
قالوا الرحيل لخمسةٍ
تأتِيcome سِراعاًswiftly منof جُمادَىJumādā
تأتِي سِراعاً من جُمادَى
They said, “Departure is in five days
They said farewell was for five,
of Jumādā, swiftly approaching.”
That would come rushing from Jumada.
فأجبتهمso I answered them إنيindeed I أتّخذْtook (word continues)
فأجبتهم إني أتّخذْ
تُI (verb ending) لهfor it البكاweeping والحزنَand sorrow زاداprovisions
تُ له البكا والحزنَ زادا
So I answered them, “Indeed, I have taken
So I replied that I would take,
weeping and sorrow as provisions for it.”
Weeping and grief as my supplies.
سبحانglory be to منthe One who قسمapportioned love? unknown check skip? الهوىx
سبحان من قسم الهوى
بينbetween الأحبَّةloved ones والبِعاداand those far away
بين الأحبَّة والبِعادا
Glory to the One who apportioned love
Glory to He who ordained love,
between loved ones and those far away,
Between the loved ones and distance.
وأعارand lent للأجفانto the eyelids سُقْfirst part of 'ailment'
وأعار للأجفان سُقْ
ماًcompletion of 'ailment' تسترِقُّthey enslave بهwith it العِباداhumankind
ماً تسترِقُّ به العِبادا
and lent the eyelids an ailment
And lent the eyelids a flow,
with which they enslave humankind.
That the servants could secretly steal.
ياoh ويحpity مَنْthe one whom منعdenied الفِراthe separation (word continues)
يا ويح مَنْ منع الفِرا
قُcompletion of 'separation' جفونَeyelids مقلتِهhis eye الرقاداsleep
قُ جفونَ مقلتِه الرقادا
Alas for him—separation has denied
Oh woe to him who denied rest,
the lids of his eye their sleep!
To the eyelids under his command.
