The pledge of the sincere, willing lover

is forever whole, even if not brought together.

Loyalty may be hoped for from one who tires easily, even if he goes far away,

but safekeeping cannot be hoped for from a pretender.

Why have I been without your letters for a while?

Is this from weariness, or from painful fear?

If it is the betrayal of your secret in our keeping

that you fear, how can you neglect one who is not neglectful?

Your hidden secret is lodged firmly in my heart,

between the ribs, the inward parts, and the rib bones.

Indeed, I have set over you the fairest witness:

the beauty of your impetuous affection, which watches over you.

So abide with the noble beneath their loyalty,

until glory says to you, 'Do not abide.'

And bear time's vicissitudes with the patience of one seasoned by experience,

and repel its calamities with the best defense.

For perhaps one day it will return with its kindness,

reviving the last remnants of life in the thirsty and hungry.

If you know that I am worthy of what

you bestow upon me in loyalty, then who is with me?

So, by the honor of the one of Hashim whose offspring I am,

an oath that brings the reckoning to four:

I shall surely give the gleaming swords power over the enemies' heads,

and surely sever fingertips not yet severed,

and surely wrench a choking lump from the collarbones,

not wrenched out by the gleaming swords, since it was not swallowed.
