جزالة شِعرِك في لفظه
وتأويلُهand its meaning الواضحclear الرّائِقُpleasing
وتأويلُه الواضح الرّائِقُ
The eloquence of your poetry lies in its wording,
The eloquence of your poetry in its wording
and its clear, pleasing meaning.
And its clear, elegant interpretation
ومُنطاعُهand its obedience لكto you يحكيtells لناto us
ومُنطاعُه لك يحكي لنا
بأنthat هواكyour love هوىًlove صادقُsincere
بأن هواك هوىً صادقُ
And its obedience to you tells us
And its willingness to obey you tells us
that your love is a sincere love.
That your passion is a sincere passion
كأنكas though you منfrom نَفْسِthe soul of كلِّevery امرِئٍperson
كأنك من نَفْسِ كلِّ امرِئٍ
لألفاظِهfor his words قائدٌa leader سائقُa driver
لألفاظِه قائدٌ سائقُ
As though, from every person's soul,
It's as if you are, for every person's words,
you were a leader and driver of his words.
A leader, guiding them along
فكلّthus every فؤادٍheart بهof it مغرمٌenamored
فكلّ فؤادٍ به مغرمٌ
هَوىًlove وإليهand toward it جَوىًlove's anguish تائِقُyearning
هَوىً وإليه جَوىً تائِقُ
Thus every heart is enamored of it,
So every heart is enamored with it
in love, and yearns toward it in anguish.
A passion, and to it inclined
يودّwish إدامتهits continuation السامِعونْthe listeners
يودّ إدامته السامِعونْ
ويعبدهand worships it القارئthe reader الناطقspeaking aloud
ويعبده القارئ الناطق
The listeners wish it to continue,
The listeners all wish
and the reader reciting aloud worships it.
To prolong it, and the eloquent reader worships it
كماjust as يفتُقunfurls الريحُthe wind نشرَfragrance الرياضْthe gardens
كما يفتُق الريحُ نشرَ الرياضْ
ويشكوand laments لمعشوقهto his beloved العاشقthe lover
ويشكو لمعشوقه العاشق
As the wind unfurls the gardens' fragrance,
As the wind spreads the scent of meadows
and the lover laments to his beloved.
And the lover complains to his beloved
وِدادكaffection for you مِنّاfrom us وإنand although كانis لاnot
وِدادك مِنّا وإن كان لا
يترجِمexpresses عنconcerning قدرهits measure الحاذقthe adept
يترجِم عن قدره الحاذق
Our affection for you, although it is not
Our love for you, though it cannot
expressed in its full measure by the adept,
Be fully conveyed by the most eloquent
مقيمٌabiding بحيثwhere أقامhas settled الفؤاthe inmost heart (continued)
مقيمٌ بحيث أقام الفؤا
دُcompletion of 'inmost heart' وَالقَلْبُand the heart والكبِدand the liver الخافِقthrobbing
دُ وَالقَلْبُ والكبِد الخافِق
abides where the inmost heart has settled,
Is firmly established where passion settled
along with the heart and the throbbing liver.
In heart, liver and pounding pulse
وإِنكand indeed you لَلْفاتحُindeed the conqueror الْمُسْتَقِself-reliant (continued)
وإِنك لَلْفاتحُ الْمُسْتَقِ
لcompletion of 'self-reliant' والقائِلُand the speaker اللَّسِنُeloquent السابِقforemost
ل والقائِلُ اللَّسِنُ السابِق
And you are indeed the self-reliant conqueror,
You are indeed the opener of receptions
and the eloquent, foremost speaker.
The first to speak, the early orator
وليسand does not يَزيدincrease هواكlove for you الثناءْpraise
وليس يَزيد هواك الثناءْ
لنّbecause (reading uncertain) هواكlove for you بِهin comparison with it فائقsurpassing
لنّ هواك بِه فائق
And praise does not increase love for you,
And praise cannot increase your passion
for love for you surpasses it.
For it, in itself, is supreme
