Sorrows are slain only by what
Sorrows are not killed except by what
The tears of the wine jars have deposited in the ewer.
The pitcher contained, tears of the grinder.

مخلوقةٌcreated منfrom قَبْلِbefore خَلْقِthe creation of الزَّمانtime
Yellow in the cup, like saffron perfume,
Yellow in the goblet, primal
Created before time itself was created.
Created before the creation of time.
أدقّsubtler محسوساًto the senses إذاwhen صُرِّفتْit is served unmixed
مِنthan دِقّةِthe subtlety of الفهمِunderstanding ولطفِand the delicacy of البيانexpression
Subtler to the senses, when served unmixed,
Most subtly sensed when decanted
Than the subtlety of understanding and the delicacy of expression.
From the subtlety of understanding and eloquence of expression.

It takes its revenge upon our feet,
It takes its revenge on our feet
And knots speech and twists the tongue.
Binding words and twisting the tongue.

Its water strings pearls within it,
Its water arranges pearls in it
Like the pearly rows in singing slave-girls' mouths.
As if it arranges the borders of tents.

As though the cup holding it were a lump of ice,
As if the goblet with it is snow
With which its cupbearer measures out saffron.
Pouring saffron with it.

Or a pearl clasped around gold,
Or a pearl held in an oyster shell
Or gold that has melted in a chrysanthemum.
Or an oyster shell melted in a ladle.

Take it, and drink it unmixed;
Pass it around and drink its nectar
May revelry and the pleasantness of the place gladden you.
There is food and a pleasant place.

And listen, amid its goblets,
And listen between its cups
To songs from the throats of beautiful women.
To the songs from the throats of beautiful maidens.

Until intoxication shakes you
Until intoxication shakes you
As a wary brave man shakes a coward;
As it shakes the courageous and frightens the coward.

Then don your virtues as armor, and rejoice
So armor your morals and revel
Amid the answering notes of your treble and second strings.
Between the neighing of your pride and determination.

And if I am absent from you then I am like one
Who sees you close at hand, with his own eyes.
Who sees you in closeness, the seeing of the eye.

May God gladden you and grant you long life,
God is with you there and your angels
And may whoever opposes you live in humiliation.
And may he who hates you live in humiliation.
