جحدتْshe denied قتليkilling me وقالتand she said كيفhow ليfor me
قتلُkilling إنسانٍa person وماليand I have no منany حُسامْa sword
She denied killing me and said, “How can I
She denied slaying me, and said "How could I
Kill a person when I have no sword?”
Slay a human, when swords I do not possess?"
وبعينيهاand in her two eyes حُسامٌa sword مرهَفٌkeen-edged
حدُّهits edge الكُحلُkohl وتفتيرُand languor السَّقامof sickness
Yet in her two eyes is a keen-edged sword,
Yet in her eyes, a sharpened sword abides,
Its edge is kohl and the languor of sickness.
Kohl-lined, that causes lovesickness and distress.
هَبْكgrant that you قدindeed أخفيتِyou hid سهميكyour two arrows فَماthen what
لكِfor you أنto تُخفيyou hide دميmy blood تحتَbeneath اللِّثامْthe veil
Grant that you have hidden your two arrows—what right
Hush! You've concealed your arrow, so do not
Have you to hide my blood beneath the veil?
Feign to hide my blood beneath your burda's hem.
هاكِhere, take عينيmy eye وفؤاديand my heart فهُمَاfor they both
عرّضانيthey both exposed me لكِto you ياO بدرَfull moon التِّمامْof fullness
Take my eye and my heart, for both
To you, beauty incarnate, pure and supreme!
Have exposed me to you, O full moon.
So shed my blood in passion - 'tis for you
فحلالso lawful لكِfor you فيin الحبّlove دميmy blood
وهوand it ياO حسناءbeautiful woman للناسfor people حرامْforbidden
So in love my blood is lawful for you,
Permissible, though to others 'tis taboo.
Yet, O beautiful one, it is forbidden to others.
