أأُظهِرshall I reveal أمor أخفيconceal الّذيwhat بيis within me منof السَقْمillness
وكمand how long أدفعI fend off الأيّامَthe days بالصبرwith patience والحِلمand forbearance
Shall I reveal or conceal the sickness within me?
Shall I reveal or conceal what ails me,
And how long shall I fend off the days with patience and forbearance?
And how many days I endure with patience and forbearance?
أعلِّلI soothe نفسيmyself بالأمانيwith hopes تجلُّداًstriving for fortitude
وأُوِهمُهاand make it believe أنthat النّزاهةintegrity فيin العُدمdestitution
I soothe myself with hopes, striving for fortitude,
I make excuses to myself with hopes, feigning endurance,
And make myself believe that integrity lies in destitution.
And delude it that chastity is in nothingness.
صبَرتُI endured علىin the face of الأحداثmisfortunes حتىuntil أذَبْنَنيthey melted me away
وحتىand until انتهيتI reached سِكِّينهُنّtheir knife إلىto العظمthe bone
I bore misfortunes until they melted me away,
I was patient with events until they melted me away,
And until their knife reached the bone.
And until their daggers reached my bone.
ولمand did not يَلقencounter مخلوقٌany creature منfrom الدهرtime مِثلthe like of ماwhat
لقيتُI suffered منfrom الأرْزاءcalamities والجورِand injustice فيin الحكمjudgment
And no creature has suffered from time anything like what
No creature has met what I met,
I have suffered from calamities and injustice in judgment.
Of woes and injustice in judgment.
فماfor not عنَفتtreated harshly غيريanyone but me الخطوبcalamities بجورهاwith their injustice
ولاnor ظلمتwronged أحداثهاtheir misfortunes أحداًanyone ظلميas I was wronged
For calamities have not assailed anyone but me with their injustice,
Yet I have not blamed others for their injustice,
Nor have their misfortunes wronged anyone as they have wronged me.
Nor have their events oppressed anyone like my oppression.
أرُونيshow me مريضَsick القلبthe heart مثليlike me والمنُىand hopes
عليلَailing الغنىwealth والحالِand condition والحظّand fortune والجِسمand body
Show me one like me, sick in heart and hopes,
Show me one sick at heart like me, in aspiration,
Ailing in wealth, condition, fortune, and body.
Infirm in wealth, condition, fortune and body.
وماnor خذلْتنيhas failed me همّتيmy resolve فألومهاso I could blame it
وماnor ضاقfell short بيfor me مذsince كنتُI was فيin محفِلٍan assembly عِلميmy knowledge
Nor has my resolve failed me, that I should blame it;
My resolve did not fail me, so I blame it not,
Nor has my learning ever fallen short for me in an assembly.
Nor was I straitened since I was in my learned company.
وأنَفذُand more penetrating منthan رمحthe spear الشّجاعof the brave man سياستيmy statecraft
وأبصَرُand more clear-sighted منthan عينthe eye البصيرِof the clear-sighted ضِياthe light فهميof my understanding
And my statecraft pierces deeper than a brave man's spear,
My policy is sharper than the spear of the brave,
And my understanding's light sees more keenly than the eye of the clear-sighted.
And my insight more keen than the seeing one’s discernment.
فلِمْso why أختفيshould I hide تحتbeneath الترابthe dust مضيَّعاًneglected
وقدwhen already نوّهتhas spoken highly فيin الخافِقينeast and west العُلاglory باسميof my name
So why should I hide beneath the dust, neglected,
Why then am I buried under dust in ruin?
When glory has already proclaimed my name in east and west?
When I have given distinction to the eminent with my name.
وماand what ليَis with me أخطوI tread فيin الحضيضthe lowest depths تخلُّفاًlagging behind
وقدwhen already عُقِدتْhas been fastened كفّيmy hand علىupon كاهِلthe shoulder النجمof the star
And why should I tread the lowest depths, lagging behind,
Why should I tread low in the dust in decline?
When my hand has been fastened to the star's shoulder?
When my hands have grasped the shoulder of the star.
أياO ابنَson معزّMuʿizz (exalter) الدينal-Dīn (the faith) والفضلُand excellence كلُّهall of it
إليكto you انتهىhas culminated دونto the exclusion of الأعارِبِthe Arabs والعُجْمِand non-Arabs
O son of Muʿizz al-Dīn—and all excellence
O son of the Excellency of the Faith, all merit
Has culminated in you, above Arabs and non-Arabs.
Has ended with you, beyond both Arab and foreigner.
أناديكshall I call to you أمor أشكوcomplain إليكto you ظُلامتيthe wrong done to me
أمor أشكوكcomplain of you أمor أكنيspeak indirectly عنabout الأمرthe matter أمor أُسميname explicitly
Shall I call to you, or complain to you of the wrong done me,
Shall I call upon you, or complain to you of my darkness?
Or complain of you, or hint at the matter, or name it outright?
Shall I complain of you, or speak subtly of the matter, or name it?
أتغدوwill they become ظُنونيmy opinions فيregarding معاليكyour lofty virtues ظُلَّماunjust
وتصبِحُand become آماليmy hopes مبدَّدةscattered النَّظْمthe stringing
Shall my opinions of your lofty virtues prove unjust,
Do my suspicions about your loftiness become unjustified?
And my hopes become scattered and unstrung,
And my hopes turn out scattered without scheme?
وأشربُand I drink إذnow that أصبحتُI have become ضيفَكyour guest منfrom دميmy blood
وآكلand I eat إذnow that خلصتُI made pure ودَّكlove for you منfrom لحميmy flesh
And shall I drink of my own blood, now that I have become your guest,
I drink my blood when I become your guest in the morning,
And eat of my own flesh, now that I have devoted pure love to you,
And eat my flesh when your love is sincere.
وأُبخَسand I am shortchanged حظّاًa share أنتyou كنتyou had ابتدأتَهfirst bestowed it
وأنتand you أحقّmost worthy الناسof all people بالعدْلof fairness فيin القَسْمapportioning
And be shortchanged in a share you yourself first bestowed,
You lessen the share that you yourself began,
Though you, of all people, are most fit to apportion justly?
Though you are most entitled to justice in allotment.
إذاif كنتyou are أنتyou yourself الحاكمthe judge المرتضَىdeemed acceptable بهwith him
فماthen what لكis with you تغدوyou become دونinstead of حُكمكyour judgment ليfor me خَصْميmy adversary
If you are the judge accepted as such,
If you are the ruler whose judgment is accepted,
Why, then, do you become my adversary instead of judging my case?
Why do you, below your rule, become my adversary?
أجِزْنيreward me علىaccording to مقدارthe measure ماof what أناI محسنٌone who does well
ولاand do not تعطنيgive me ماwhat ليسdoes not يبلغُهreach it سَهْميmy arrow
Reward me in proportion to my excellence,
Give me according to the extent I have done good,
And do not give me what my arrow cannot reach.
And do not give me what my arrow cannot reach.
فإنيfor indeed I علىagainst إنكارdenial مَجْدكِof your glory أتّقيI take guard
وعنكand in your defense إذاwhen رامتaimed at عُلاكyour eminence العداthe foes أرميI shoot
For I stand guard against denial of your glory,
For I fear, if I deny your glory,
And shoot in your defense when foes aim at your eminence.
And against you, if your highness intends harm, I shoot.
وماand not كانwas حقّيmy due منكfrom you ذاthis غيرَbut أننيthat I
رجوتُI hoped وراءَbeyond الحربwar عاقبةَthe outcome السِّلْمof peace
And this was not my due from you; yet I
My due from you was nothing but that I
Had hoped, beyond war, for an ending in peace.
Hoped, after war, for the consequence of peace.
فكمfor many منof محبّa lover راحَdeparted بالّلحظwith a glance قانعاًcontent
إذاwhen راحhe departed ممنوعاًdeprived منof الضَّمّembracing واللّثْمand kissing
For many a lover has departed content with a glance,
Many a lover went, content with a glance,
When he departed denied an embrace and a kiss.
When deprived of embrace and kiss.
فإنso if كنتُI am محبوباًbeloved فكنthen be خيرَthe best واصلone who joins
لحبليto my cord فإنّيfor indeed I فيكin you مجتمعgathered الهّمِّconcern
So if I am beloved, be the best at joining
So if I am a beloved, be the best companion
My cord; for all my concern is gathered in you.
To my rope, for in you are gathered all my concerns.
